What does it mean to build antifragile relationships and teams? Teams and organizations, at least successful ones, are based on relationships that "work." Often we say we want 'strong' or 'good' relationships, but is 'strong' good enough? We will look at ways you can identify if the foundation of your team relationship is fragile or antifragile. Then we will work with a number of approaches and tools to help you create or expand on the foundation of an antifragile for your team.  

Help your team (or organization) move towards a space where your relationships and therefore teams can thrive. We will consider how to build an alliance with a team and how to setup, in advance, to deal with potential conflicts. We will also explore a number of common issues contributing to toxic team situations. Antifragile is not an endpoint.  Like agile, it is a journey and mindset. The ideas we will explore are not just about "them", but are about "us" first. We have to start with us. What can WE bring to the table and what can WE do or be. Expect to work individually and with others in this interactive workshop.

Outline/structure of the Session

This session will iteratate on sessions from Mile High Agile, Humanizing Work, and Santa Barbara Agile (next week).

 

  1. Opening Exercise – warm up (TBD based on size, group energy, and time of day – presence focused check-in based on theater games/improvisation) [5m]
  2. Exercise to identify real issues and problems in teams and organizations. We will look at what is happening that is frustrating and annoying (past or present). This is the opening where people will capture a few ideas to explore later. [5m]
  3. Learning Alliance – We will, as a group, build the beginning of a learning alliance; Small groups will come up with ideas of what they want to bring to the group. [10m]
  4. Conflict Protocol – We will outline the start of a conflict protocol to use within our session; This and the learning alliance are only step one of this process – see below, where we will build on these. [5m]
  5. Understanding Antifragile – what does it mean to be antifragile? We will look at examples of fragile and antifragile and talk about the history behind the term (from the book – Antifragile). [15m]
    1. The basis of teams and organizations – we will explore the idea of relationships as the core of teams and organizations. 
    2. Antifragile Relationships - taking the idea of antifragile to relationships, what do antifragile relationships look like? What are examples of these? 
  6. Constellation exercise – on antifragile relationships – We will do a moving constellation to see where people are in a relationship of their choice to see and feel the reality of where “we” as a group are on this topic.
  7. Responsibility and Team Toxins: [35m]
    1. Team Toxins – We will explore the 4 team toxins (stonewalling, defensiveness, blaming, and contempt), identifying your preferred toxin, and looking at antidotes for the toxins;
    2. Antidotes – We will explore antidotes as tools to help us work with toxins. We will revisit the Alliance and Conflict Protocol to work with those at a now deeper level – asking what can we add, change or expand. We will use the issues and problems we identified earlier as windows into real challenges to evaluate what we might really do! In addition to the antidotes of the Alliance and Conflict Protocol, participants can explore other antidotes (e.g. awareness, The Responsibility Process, COIN, mediation, and more).
  8. Moving Forward – We will step back, review the larger context and look at where we might go with our relationships, teams, and organizations if we are willing to employ some of these ideas.

 

This session is planned to be an interactive workshop using flipcharts (it is not a slide based lecture). Please let me know if this is an issue (since the submission system appears to want a slides link for completeness).

 

Learning Outcome

Learn and practice a number of tools to continue moving your relationships to a more antifragile position to improve your results and success.

- Be able to create your own Alliance (with a partner, team, etc.) that focuses on what each person will really bring to the situation.

- Be able to create your own Conflict Protocol that provides a start-up plan to dealing with conflict before it arises.

- Understand what team toxins are, how they are valuable, and how to apply antidotes to the toxins.
