Concept to Backlog: Power of Design Sprints
Too often we find ourselves at the cusp of exploring something new, something greenfield. This could be a brand-new app, a large digital product, or just a shiny new module in an existing product. But before your organization commits time and resources, wouldn't you want to be able to understand the risks, get your entire team (POs, UX, Engineer and so on) on board, evaluate if the product idea is even worth pursuing, and finally get a high-level backlog ready? - Process aside, what should ideally happen on Days 1 to 5? Prep is everything and Audience will not break into small teams.
- Day 1 - Empathize - Live exercise using Survey Monkey (if audience is large) or face to face when audience is less than 100 people
- Day 2 - Interpret - Live exercise by looking at a slide that extends from Day 1 and using Survey Monkey
- Day 3 - Ideation - Quick crazy 4 ideation exercise - teams sketch
- Day 4 - Experiment - Teams tests their approach
- Day 5 - Test and Learn - Teams review their designs / ideas with other teams.

The market and user research data looks good. There is an opportunity. Marketing is high-fiving with product on a vetted concept. You have a good list of features that need to be built and a vision on what the product's first cut might look like. Funding is secured and its a go-build full steam ahead. But what next? We will have a well defined concept, personas, epics, tasks and stories as our lego blocks. And we will focus all our efforts on building a story map, in the most practical and efficient but collaborative way.
