 This 90 minute hands-on workshop is aimed at simulating product development in an uncertain environment. You will work in a team with other participants to shape roadmap for a product in a familiar domain. Each participant will be given a 

The  workshop is also being run at Innovation Games Summit in Amsterdam in September 2013 (http://www.igsummit.net/prashant-gandhi.html) . It has also been successfully delivered at a number of blue chip clients in the UK for an introduction to product management and lean startup concepts.

Outline/structure of the Session

Participants are given a set of story cards pertaining to a familiar domain with story point estimates, but of unknown value.  Using the available estimates, stakeholder requirements and budget constraints, the product team decides on their initial MVP by applying their judgement. 

Value is realised when the product "goes live". Through market feedback and through understanding what the competition is doing, the team can continue to release other features. The team that realises the maximum value wins.

Learning Outcome

Everyone knows about Product Owner's role within the team - providing details, making key decisions and validating the product. This session explores at their remit beyond the team - understanding market feedback, shaping product decisions, reacting to competition etc. 

Participants will learn about

1. Shaping their product MVP

2. Realising early value 

3. Reacting to customer / competitive feedback

    Hi Prashant,

       To me, this workshop just looks like an earned value game.  Where / how do you introduce the lean concepts you mention, how do you help with the decision around MVP, etc?  Do you talk about the point of MVPs, learning, pivots, etc?  Will the workshop allow testing hypothesis, and so on.  I think feel there is value in the session, I am just not seeing yet how it conveys some of the broader learning that would be valuable.

      Hi Joel,

      I dont know the earned value game. The learnings I talk about come from experiencing the release, getting market feedback and then using the feedback to shape the next release.  The story backlog has a number of stories that address a particular theme. When the product team creates an initial backlog, they get feedback on the themes they are touching.  This would help them realise where the value lies, but also make them realise that the more themes they touch, the more chances they have of getting to a good product.

      Not sure if this is clear enough and I appreciate the time being spent on this, but will welcome your feedback.

    What will be the outcome? - I am not clear how team can facilitate to come up with right MVP. Folks who is close to business and users take a call?

      It is a simulation. The team will come up with MVP based initially on their own bias and stakeholder feedback. Subsequently, with each release, they will get user feedback (pre-canned) which will help them refine their product.

    Prashant - the process described in your proposal is very high-level and doesn't give reviewers enough details about the problem statement and mechanics of the workshop. What is it that makes making decisions so difficult for a product owner, and what are the challenges faced by POs in defining MVPs? How does this game help them get to better decision-making (that their education, learning and experience doesn't currently help them with). Finally, how has this game been practiced in a real-life situation, and what have been the results? As much as games are a great tool to aid and even expedite learning, how much of those learnings have been transferred to the workplace - any data points on that will be helpful for reviewers to learn and evaluate your proposal better.

    Also, the title is generic and could convey multiple types of scenarios for a product owner - maybe you want to highlight the specific game you are proposing?

    Finally, why do you think it should be in 'beyond agile' track? From the details about the workshop, I get a feeling that you are essentially examining the role of product onwer in the context of agile development (though with a game). Do you want to look at proposals in other tracks too, just in case you find a better fit with some of other ideas there?

         I will second TV's opinion here. The abstract does not seem to have enough content to get some understanding/clarity on the workshop. I know, you need to keep things in suspense for the workshop, but some more clarity will definitely help us in appreciating the workshop. It will really be nice, if you can provide few more pointers on the workshop.

      “Fixed price, fixed deliverables, and fixed schedule” contracts are just about the worst way to write contracts involving software, yet they are the most popular – so what are some techniques to use to fix that?

      Organizations that perform professional services for software development or develop software on a work for hire basis are usually engaged bound by extensive contracts.  These contracts are typically characterized as “fixed price, fixed deliverables, and fixed schedule.”  These, of course, are the vertices of the “Iron Triangle of Software Development” and foreshadow a poor outcome due to issues that make the requirements gathering and project estimation phases that precede contract negotiation so prone to error.

      Given this, the question becomes one of “how can I engage clients in a way that allows us each to achieve our goals?”  If Agile and Lean methods are the status quo for good development practices, how can I write contracts for development services that embrace this mindset and let each side achieve it’s goals better?  This lecture and roundtable explores the many facets of this question and provides the attendee answers that they can use going forward.

      For many, the idea that you can transform an organization from the PMO outwards seems odd, if not impossible.  But my experience says that this is becoming a trend that more and more clients are asking advice for. 

      We know that for an Agile transformation to work, we need to engage not just the Delivery Teams to approach work differently, but we need a change agent high in the organization to support that change in mindset.  I’ve always found it difficult to find that right person in an executive leadership role who is willing to have the courage to “bet the company” on a new and unproven approach such as Agile and Scrum.  As coaches, we tend to start “pilot” projects, and hope that traction will occur “once everyone sees the great results that we get.”  But I think that this approach is fraught with peril of not getting the right project to start with, not getting the right results immediately, and not motivating people by seeing results from a process that they are not comfortable with.

      I think I’ve come upon a new approach that works better.  Instead of trying to “sell” Agile at an Enterprise level, embrace pure Lean principles high in the organization and work with the PMO leader at the organization.  Once they are comfortable with ideas such as “more leadership and less management”, “shorter concept to cash cycles”, “enabling Lean Startup mentality for disruptive product development”, “always looking for the elimination of waste”, “exploiting variability through appropriate cadence control and appropriate utilization rates”, “delegated authority”, “continuous improvement”, and “rolling planning”, the PMO becomes a terrific agent for instituting change, because they are usually already endowed with the right responsibilities and accountabilities that can push the organization forward.
