We are in living in the days where global giants(UNICEF, WHO, Bill Gates Foundation,...) invest in the social sector which now is the hitlist in the record of attraction.  Information technology required for the upliftment of social sector via lot of aggressive themes on Financial Inclusion, HealthCare & Medical Inclusion, Targetting MDGs(Millenium Development Goals), etc... The session is focussed on portraying one such instance and how agile with lean methodology helped in the accomplishments of major contribution of IT in social space. The session will also have a greater latitude on how analysis and the breakdown of complex problem acheived more easier in agile way driving more directed at the outcomes and not just at the outputs.

Outline/structure of the Session

Session will cover the following:

  1. A different journey to be taken during inception
  2. As tech partners for the social projects, what is called as scope in Investor/Client's dictionary?
  3. Where we stand in enabling Client in agile working way.
  4. What beyond the agile way,we take a stand to place ourselves? [ Not just go by plain feature prioritisation, story-mapping, ...]
  5. Are the actual estimates, scoping,Iteration planning help?
  6. How to more focus on the outcome rather than outputs in drawing the acceptance criteria of stories?

Learning Outcome

Will provoke a thinking on different lines on the value addition of working agile lean way for social projects.

How the above gives us more into the real world problems (visualising them) & not just stories, velocity, scope, estimates,...etc...

Target Audience

More in client coordination, business analysis and critical roles on technical analysis

    Hi,

In what way Social Impact projects are different from commercially viable projects? Cost dimensions are crticial for both worlds.  For eg:- we can draw a uniquness to FOSS development and how can inspire it into main stream. Update with more specfics and details to consider further

      Hi

Its nice to see your question...I suppose that its not about only the billing aspect that I am interested in presenting, its more from the agile-lean standpoint as to how effective it is go by lean way for social impact projects...like evolving features, more closely with users, quick turnaround to the investors( usually donors incase of social projects...)

Another aspect to the above is also how to go beyond agile what was more effective for these kind of projects where there is very less insight into the infrastructure support and even investors have grey areas on some unforseen aspects when rolled out to society...( less predictable than the market research analysis for the other businesses... like retail, etc...)

I feel that consulting and working the regular style of agile (lean) has to be tweaked and enhanced for socially invested systems...

      Thanks,
      Khaarthigha

Whatever you have mentioned is quite applicable to any product development. If you feel you can bring a differentiation in social impactful project and its learning to agile community, please update the specifics in the proposal.  Also please provide some link on your work on the similar lines.

I understand. But what is different is:

Lot of probablities in normal projects on scoping out the features while kickstarting the project but in social projects features evolve in most cases(one such case is what I am going to portray in my session)

Also, the investor ( the Client) really knows what they really want & what they focus on, but in social projects, even the social investor is uncertain on the approach to the live issues of society.

Also, the pilot launches for doing a formative research on field - does not usually happen in the other businesses as we can know the users of the system that we build and relate the workflow exisitng in the business. Whereas in Social projects, no framed workflows , we draw the workflows by the analysis & research in the field along with the investor. We go beyond on what we usually do in the other business projects as we do not enter the field directly but our Client does.

hmm...there are many things like the above which are different and where exactly agile with lean really helps and what we do beyound our conventional way is required for a proper outcome.....

Everything at an overview seems to be similar..the difference is what i am going to bring in the session...Also proposal is one in which I have given a picture based on different products / projects I worked on and the learnings that I bring based on my perception and analysis..I dont think I have a link to that...as it is not generic...Anyways... I thank you for your suggestion...

    Hi,

Thanks for a very different topic in this theme. Could you please elaborate little more with details about what type of social impact projects you are talking about?

You can have a look at the video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KH_ZDVjyC68) for a similar talk in Agile 2012

    Regards,

    Jerry
