Experience Report - Scaling Agile to Enterprises using SAFe for Yahoo Media

Addressing the complexity of building enterprise-class software systems is always a challenge.  I would like to present my experience report on Scaling Agile for Yahoo Media and how SAFe addressed some of the challenges and complexity.

Outline/structure of the Session

1. Challenges overview ( end to end visibility at Business unit, delivery predictability and quality) - 10 mins
2. SAFe techniques for Scaling Agile Adoption - 30 mins
3. Metrics and Summary - 5 mins

Sorry I could not respond earlier than this to few comemnts as I was travelling back to back last 2 weeks. My session wil lfocus on portfolio and integration level challenges at BU level and how we managed some of those challenges via

1. Scaling the enterprise backlog and how we managed cross functional dependencies

2. PSI planning

3. Few optimizations through HIP sprints ( Hardening, Innovation and planning) on a quarterly level

4. Through rules and guidelines on Release trains with less trade off with flexibility

5. Finally, through better release context governance

Hope this provides high level understanding of how we tweaked the traditional agile and using SAFe techniques to manage portofolio level initaitives with better predictabilty and quality

In addition to the above , I shall cover

1. How we were benefitted with SAFe ScrumXP  in few value streams and how Kanban and XP coexisted in some of the value streams.

2. Start doing more of ATDD and less of TDD

Learning Outcome

  1. Frequency of delivery increased from quarterly to fortnightly
  2. Cost to deliver down 50%
  3. 100% of projects delivered on time and on budget
  4. Happy project sponsors
  5. Happy teams

I like the idea of this experience report - SAFe is garnering a lot of talk at the moment - but I'd to understand a little more about:

    • the specifics of this experience - what challenges were faced by the team?  why was SAFe chosen? what elements of SAFe were in play?
    • what the audience will learn (the learning outcomes in the proposal described what the organization learned rather than what people who attend this talk will learn)

Can you provide a bit more detail about those areas?  Thanks

      Ellen,

Audience will gain an understanding of how we have been using SAFe practices and how they are helping us in challenging some of the current practices ( Agile).. May be some of the custom practices can be leveraged and used across their organizations especially in the following areas:

Though SAFe technique would be probably covered, are you going to elaborate on how you customized it to suit Yahoo or you had used it as-is adapted from the SAFe framework ? The reason to ask is that we are using quite a bit of SAFe style of scaling but there is a significant customization that is in the works. Did you change the way things are being done currently to suit SAFe recommendations ?

      Venkat,

We started using SAFe for last 2 quarters. We followed the high level guidelines. However made few changes as per our BU needs

Following are few areas we made few customziations..

SAFe is picking up in the industry and many in audience would want to hear about it. Could elaborate bit more on the specific points that you will be covering under SAFe techniques (30 mins)
