Alright, your company has gone through an upheaval and adopted agile journey. It has taken months if not years in the agile transformation. The transformation has started paying off for teams in your company. That’s when you realize that your vendor organizations are not agile enough. It was quickly evident that the learning rate and adoption rates of the parent organization and the vendor organizations are different. In a truly connected world where your vendor teams form significant part of your business, it is not only important to have vendors become agile, but inevitable part for your successful agile journey.
How to bring about agile transformation in a vendor company. Easy, ask them to be agile. Or better yet, fly few coaches down to the vendor organization. Question is who bears the cost or what is the incentive for vendors for this transformation. Vendors themselves might be too big and only a small team is dealing with your company. Who bears the cost of missing service level agreements in the transformation journey. The other odd scenario is that vendors report they are agile now and are compliant to all agile practices. They even have hired an agile coach and will be sending sprint reports citing velocity and other metrics. A survey report indicating agile maturity is circulated to the C level executives and procurement organization. These are practical issues when it comes to vendor agile management.
