Examining Agile through the framework of "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People (R)"

A team’s (and for that matter an individual’s) effectiveness exists in a context – it does not exist “out somewhere there” or “in-here” – it exists “out-here”. This presentation examines the relevance of the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People in the context of an agile team.

As an example, one of the cardinal/foundational principles of Dr. Covey’s 7 Habits is the concept of “Proactiveness” – in the agile context when teams create their vision, this concept can be a powerful metaphor to get them to think that they are not victims of their past, or their circumstances, or their thoughts/perceptions/feelings – they are free to chose their script for the future. It is very common to observe teams restrict themselves to “what they assume is possible” – like a driver who is constantly looking at the rear-view mirror (guided by the past or by the memory) rather than the windshield (which is vastly more empowering and expressive of creativity).

From the perspective of agile, this exercises the muscles of courage, motivation, sustainable development and self-organization. When understood at an experiential level and implemented, it takes the “interactions between individuals” (across the roles) to unimaginable heights cutting across the artificial fissures of roles, geographies and cultures.

The first three habits are about personal victory (personal effectiveness) and can provide a rich framework for an individual within the agile team. The last three are about public victory (or inter-personal effectiveness) where when every team member has been able to accomplish private victory first, can contribute to and make inter-personal victory possible in the context of the team.

    Also curious to know if you have some example or case study for the application of the Dr. Covey’s 7 Habits concept of “Proactiveness” as metaphor.
