Do you know what it takes to become a good scrum master? Do you know what skills are required? Scrum Master is a team coach, isn't it? Do you know what coaching really means? By the way, what is the career path of a scrum master?

"Scrum Master" is, according to me, the most mis-understood and the most abused word and role currently in the industry. Hence I want to share some of my thoughts on "real" scrum mastering through this 45 mins fast-paced talk.

Outline/structure of the Session

I will start with defining scrum master role and then move to what "real" coaching means using Dr. David Rock's TAPS model. Then I plan to highlight how a real scrum master can add value to each scrum ceremony starting with standup meeting, sprint planning, review, retro and what he/she would do during the sprint.

I will end my talk with answers to following 2 questions:

  1. Is Scrum mastering a full time job??
  2. What is the career path of a scrum master??

The slides below gives a rough idea of my topic and content. In the talk the focus would be more on slides at the end showcasing facilitation techniques in each ceremony. The slides are old and would be reworked for my talk.

Learning Outcome

Scrum mastering and coaching are most mis-understood terms in the industry, according to me. Participants would

  1. Understand some un-common ways of scrum mastering might seem contradictory at first (like do not stop and time standup meetings to 15 mins)
  2. How scrum master can add value to each of the scrum ceremonies and also during the sprint
  3. Be aware of the mindset and facilitation skills required as a scrum master
  4. What is a probable career path of a scrum master
  5. The real meaning of scrum mastering
  6. The real meaning of coaching

The slides below gives a rough idea of my topic and content. In the talk the focus would be more on slides at the end showcasing facilitation techniques in each ceremony. The slides are old and would be reworked for my talk.
