Coaching Distributed Agile Teams Through A Coaching Cohort
Collaboration, a cornerstone of agility, is inarguably a key success factor for self-organized productive teams. Despite being separated by thousands of miles, the need to collaborate successfully and to build team synergy is unchanged for agile transformation journey.
We are going to share some key highlights from our recent work for standing up agile coaching cohort and how it helped to coach highly distributed teams and scale agility at an enterprise level.
Outline/structure of the Session
Coaching geographically distributed agile teams in agile practices that had challenges in collaboration due to conflicts in time zone.
Groom and build Agile Coaches locally and create synergies within team that spread across time zones.

Lean Priority Method – Identifying the “Right” MVP
Agile Product Development Teams often find it difficult to carve out the minimum viable product (MVP) to build first, because they hardly know what the high priority features are. Many teams follow some prioritization technique, but often find some pitfalls in it and end up doing incorrect MVP. We want to explain and demonstrate the Lean Priority Method we use to prioritize features first and then the stories next, in order to craft the MVP for a product. The method has a formula with parameters used in WSJF (Weighted Shortest Job First) technique of SAFe (Scaled Agile Framework) and couple of other parameters (User Adoption and Uncertainty) based on our coaching and learning experience.
Iteration Zero – Asking the Powerful Questions
Doing the ground work is important for any work, skipping that will cause disruption while executing the work. This applies to product development in iterative fashion as well. In order to execute iterations successfully, a set of activities have to be thought through and completed before starting the iterations. Those activities are called Iteration Zero activities. And how do we discover those activities? By asking some powerful questions to the Value Team Facilitator (VTF) – same as Product Owner, Agile Team Facilitator (ATF) – same as Scrum Master and Agile Team Members of an Agile Team.

Archana Jain is Vice President of Information Technology for Verizon Enterprise Solutions, serving Verizon’s large business customers. In her current role, Archana leads a technology team spanning four continents in support of the technology enablement of Billing, Service Management, Product Development, and Managed Services.
Archana is a seasoned Agile practitioner who is championing the adoption of Agile in Verizon. Archana has been leading the Agile journey for over 5 years in large businesses and understands the nuances of introducing and sustaining agile practices and behaviors
Archana played a key role in the business transformation of the Quote to Bill automation program and is actively involved in migrating customers to this platform. She and her team modernized the Enterprise billing platform and have performed multiple systems consolidations achieving efficiency and scale. Archana simplified and automated many aspects of the service management platform that supports multiple products such as network, security and applications. She also enabled self-service by making dashboard, inventory and change management capabilities available to both managed and unmanaged customers. With an eye towards the future, Archana is enabling innovation SDN/NFV and virtualization to revolutionize managed services.
Prior to this appointment, Archana held the position of Executive Director for Contact Center Management. She and her team managed CRM tools, resource management and chat technologies, as well as call quality and monitoring tools. Archana enabled mobility solutions, speech analytics and modernized the CRM platform to enable savings as well as increase adoption. Archana is a hands-on Agile practitioner and an advocate who has a track record, particularly with large teams, of implementing process innovations while eliminating waste.
Archana holds a Bachelor of Technology from Indian Institute of Technology (Delhi, India) and earned her Masters in Information Management from Stevens Institute of Technology.
