Eleven Dysfunctions: Good Enough To Kill Soul of an Organisation

From our experience, we have picked 11 dysfunctions and behaviours that are enough to kill soul of any organisation, slowly but surely. We will be using few games and polls to make people learn these dysfunctions. During this, we will also speak about Agile Spine Model (Danie Roux, Kevin Trethewey, Joanne Perold) and Personal Behavioural Model, which can help people in making constructive decisions in various situations.

Outline/Structure of the Workshop

Eleven dysfunctions we will be targeting on -

Delays are Costly

Reverse Application of Agile Spine Model

Lack of Sense of “One Organisation One Vision”

Lack of Trust and Autonomy

Money retains best talent? Really

Mindset of making an "HiPPO Happy"

Non existence of Personal Behavioural Model

Saving immediate $ Vs long term benefits

DisCriminal Minds

ImPatience

Individual Award System

Session will start with -

- Very short introduction (3 mins)

1. DELAYS ARE COSTLY (5 Mins)

Will share how at one organisation, instead of starting small, inspecting and adapting, in order to scale agility, a department kept working in old ways for more than a year, and the loss was huge in terms of customer value, people and money of course.

2. REVERSE APPLICATION OF AGILE SPINE MODEL (10 mins)

We will teach how to apply this model in an organisation, which is created by Danie Roux and Kevin Trethewey. Will share how at some organisations, its applied in reverse order which ultimately screws the culture and becomes a trouble.

3. LACK OF SENSE OF “ONE ORGANISATION ONE VISION” (10 mins)

Method - Puzzle Game

LEARNING - One team can’t survive without help of other teams hence we should refrain from thinking just about our team or area, instead of our organisation.

4. LACK OF TRUST AND AUTONOMY (10 mins)

Method - Paperplane Game with a different aim of learning

LEARNING - How much business value we can get more if we have less people to validate process, and more to do the actual work. Then we will share my experience from one of the organisations, where different people from different vendors came just to validate what teams are doing is the right way of doing or wrong. And what they said? Also, organisation hired UX and Design experts, and instead of trusting their creativity, they were asked to just what was said. Hence when you hire people, trust them and give autonomy.

5. MONEY ATTRACTS AND RETAIN BEST TALENT. REALLY? (5 Mins)

Method - Live Poll

Some experience sharing with a message for people to preach and teach

6. MINDSET OF MAKING AN HiPPO HAPPY (5 MINS)

Will uncover - Who are HiPPO's in our organisations? How many a times, we start working to make them happy and forget our customers. And how it impacts an organisation?

7. NON EXISTENCE OF PERSONAL BEHAVIOURAL MODEL (5 MINS)

We will introduce a behavioural model here, which Rahul have created. It talks about, what we must think of first, while acting or reacting in any situation. We can take constructive decisions in all situations, if we think about this model in right order. The moment we apply it in reverse order in any situation, we start doing wrong things.

8. SAVING IMMEDIATE SMALL $ V/S LONG TERM BENEFITS (5 - MINS)

Will uncover why programmers must also test. Why quality is responsibility of whole team? Why mindset of programmers must only program, screws the intent behind feature teams or squads?

9. DisCRIMINAL MINDS (7 MINS)

What is the most famous discrimination in our IT industry? Is it Gender, Race, Professional Background, religion, culture, Color, Education? Probably not. Then what is it?

10. ImPATIENCE (10 MINS)

Do we remember the time of our childhood when we started walking and then running. Or when we are parents, we see our kids starting their first walk on their own and then running in few months. Do you think it just happens on one single day? Probably not? Why we need to be patient when we start journey towards agility?

11. INDIVIDUAL AWARD SYSTEM (8 Mins)

Activity - We will mimic Individual Award System and Team Award System in the room, in a very simple way and will ask people to share their feelings around it and then will explain the advantages of Team Award System

How individual award system screws culture of an organisation? Why its a toxic thing to have in any working environment.

Rahul, Alhad - thanks for your proposal. When I go thru the detailed timeline, I fear if you will have time to cover all the 11 topics? Some of them are givne as less as 5 minutes, and based on prior experience, that never happens. Also, 90 minutes is too long to hold people's attention. Can you think of a 45minute proposal and introduce all 11 dysfucntions but deep-dive on, say, top 3, but provide enough references on rest of them?

      Hi Tathagat,

We trust in your experience. Our Aim is to provide the knowledge on these dysfunctions, what we have experienced in our orgs. Happy to talk about them in 45 minutes and deep diving on 3 of them. However, I believe selecting the top 3 we will leave on the audience. We will keep it simple and ask audience to raise hands for the topics, they feel strong about, for discussion. Initially i thought of live polling as well, but then rather being dependent on wi-fi and instead of spending time on technology, we should spend time on discussions.

In our experience, people feel good and are benefitted more when we give some autonomy to people in selecting topics for the discussions. And then for rest of the topics we will convey a message that we can discuss in open space or fish bowl or lean coffees if we are planning any, during the conference days.

      Regards,

      Alhad and Rahul
