Personal Kanban: Making your life better, one sticky note at a time.
Kanban isn’t just for work. How I reluctantly learned to use Kanban to get my personal life in order and why I’ve never been happier.
Outline/Structure of the Case Study
Note: This talk can range from 20 to 40 minutes.
Intro: Introduce why I’m doing this talk 5 min
Define personal Kanban 5 min
Define why “You” want to use it. 5 min
Psychology behind it and ways to make this work for you: Trello, whiteboard, book, etc… 5 min
Examples: I’ll be asking the audience to help me craft a list of “home work” that we’ll cover. Will likely include: kid chores, moving, home improvements, vacation planning, etc. 5 min
Use of color in personal Kanban. 5 min.
Use of iconography in personal kanban. 5 min
WiP. How to establish a wip limit. Explain what it is and how to use it effectively 5 min
Conclusion. 5 min
Q/A open forum for the remainder of the timebox.
Learning Outcome
Understanding why personal kanban works, even at home.
Learn how to make this work for the audience as an individual. I ask questions throughout the presentation to make the content more personal. This presentation has no slides. I pre-build several types of kanban boards and use the boards to step through the things I'm sharing.

- Weaknesses & Risks - What are the weaknesses we have, as an individual and as a team?
During this session, we walk through our agenda for team lift-offs, facilitation posters and preparation work required, materials needed, and facilitation tips and tricks. All packaged in a handy pocket guide, that you can use to explore tried and tested techniques for each essential element. You also have an opportunity to practice some of these techniques during the session.

After we published the method in a blog in Japanese, many teams in Japan started using the method. We've not taught or facilitated directly; people just accepted and started using it.
We'd like to share the method as well as how the teams accepted the technique in Japan.

Recruitment and selection for coaches requires finding people with a combination of the right mindset/attitude AND competencies (skillset).
This talk will take the audience through a real life case study on how Telstra sourced candidates for a recent recruitment drive for 60 ways of working coaches. Hiring processes had a strong focus on mindset using new ways of selection processes.
Once candidates had been selected they were enrolled into a micro-credential capability uplift program that recognised competency as it is achieved throughout a learning journey.

Imagine you are a Mad Agile Scientist and have a diabolical experiment to conduct - what would happen if you exchanged the brains of a Product Owner and Scrum Master? Mwuhahahaha!!! How would the body of a Product Owner with the brain of a Scrum Master act? And vice versa?
Perhaps the Scrum Master would now treat the team like a backlog? This Scrum Master would be focused on value and maintaining a coaching backlog of team and person improvements. This Scrum Master is refining the team, crafting a group that delivers value.

One of the fundamental things an organization does is deliver decisions. Almost every deliverable an organization makes (be it a product or service) boils down to a decision that someone or a group of people made.
Combine that with the idea that one of the most engaging things that employees can do at work is to be involved in decision making, it becomes one of the most important things you do in an organization. Yet we put very little thought into how we make decisions, especially in groups.
Most people/groups don’t think about the decision making process they use and usually fall back to a few common ones at random or do what they are comfortable with, without much thought to the tradeoffs they entail.
This talk explores a better approach to decision-making that is fast and results in better decisions with more buy-in from everyone involved.

Hi, thanks for the feedback. I've actually changed this a bit and will spend time helping the audience create a personal board that they can take home with them.
I met Jim Benson years ago at an agile conf in Seattle. All I saw was a way to have to make me work harder on personal organization which at the time, didn't appeal to me. Then my family decided to move to Australia. We had two kids, a dog, a winery, and a house to unload before we could move. In addition, my husband had to move overseas before me, leaving me with 6 months of daunting work ahead of me. One evening, over some wine, I remembered Jim's talk and decided to try it out. I made a door in my kitchen a board. I created a system of colors and symbols to help me quickly prioritize each morning. I found that my stress levels decreased. I was able to make decisions far more quickly. In the end, kanban shaved what could have been additional months off my timeline. Now, I'm teaching it to my youngest kid as a way to deal with the overwhelming amount of work they face in high-school. I love sharing this story and have helped many people along the way to learn how to make personal kanban work for them. Please let me know if you have additional questions.
