So you are considering getting a coach to help you in your transition to Agile. Or perhaps you are an Agile practitioner considering becoming an Agile coach. What do these Agile coaches do? What makes them different?

This session will enter the foyer of the house that describes what coaches do and considerations one can have when they think about coaching (including hiring one). Prepare to be challenged and to learn a bit of what it takes to be or work with a coach; it has little to do with courses or certifications, though they may help. In covering what coaches do, one can now begin to think along the lines of what the skills one may need to improve.

Outline/structure of the Session

This talk will open with an actual coaching exercise (20 min).

It then moves though some helpful models on how to think about coaching based on responsibility that can be used to determine the roles as needed, and other dimensions that come into play. It also steps through various "voices" taken from The Mindful Coach. (10 min)

To make these more concrete, we'll step through some scenarios a coach may perform and review what roles the coach is taking and the vices they may end up using within that role. (5 min)

Closing Exercises/Statements (10 min)

    Paul,

    I presume you'll have to cut some from the slide deck to fit 45 minutes. Get it down to the essentials. This looks like a really good overview of coaching and coaching models.

      Sorry it took a bit to get back to you, I just returned from vacation and have had a lot on my plate.

      Yes, that is something I recognize will happen, I just haven't fully decided which ones to cut per se. I plan to do some timed rehearsals of this (It's how I usually finalize my presentations). For time that goes over, I start experimenting with what to cut and how it affects the message. For example, my current gut would tell me that in my grid arrangement that shows the ACI, ICF, and Mindful coaching views - these slides aren't adding much value at this point for a shorter presentation (though they are something I can walk through quickly). Same with slides 42-45.

      Another gut feeling I have is that the closing exercise will get simplified more.

      I'm also expecting to give this as a brownbag at a customer site, which will have an almost identical time-frame so that will give me some true insight into how it will go with a crowd.

        I found slides 11-13 very interesting. Slides 42-45 not so much.

        Another point of feedback is that I and some others find the script text very hard to read.

          Thanks for that feedback George, as I down select and rework the slides, I'll use the font that is actually in the table on slide 10 that looks semi-handwritten. I guess Sigmund Freud's handwriting wasn't that neat... (Yes it's a font based on his handwriting...)

    I have always gravitated towards data because I enjoy identifying patterns to tell a story. I am also a passionate Agilist, playing the role of change agent in Agile Transformations. Therefore, my natural inclination has always been to couple the two together to drive change.

    I like to think of collecting team data as just another feedback loop in an Agile environment. After all, the people doing the work know best! Therefore, why not collect data points from teams to identify areas for continuous improvement throughout the organization? I have had some success in this area, but unfortunately this approach has not always lead to the desired outcome.

    Like everything else that could be used for good, data can also be leveraged for evil. I have learned the hard way that if an organization lacks an Agile mindset, and does not foster an environment of safety, trust, and experimentation, collecting team metrics can actually lead to more harm than good. However, once the prerequisite of safety is established, data no longer becomes your enemy as a change agent, but your ally, and a powerful tool in your Agile coaching toolbox.

    I have had both success and failures in this areas. Join me for this interactive session where I share my experiences and help answer some of your questions on using data to drive change.

    Are your solutions to recurring issues having only minor improvements? Are some of these solutions actually making things worse in the long run? When answering yes to these, typically, we are trying to solve the issues with too narrow a view. Oddly we think we are addressing it at sufficient level but usually not. In order to see the entire picture we need a common language that will enable us to understand an entire complex adaptive system (e.g. organizations, teams, individuals). Join us as we learn a language called System Modeling (aka. Causal Loop Diagrams).

    With this language we will be able to have rich dialogue to gain a full understanding of the entire complex adaptive system so that we can create solutions at the fundamental level and not the symptomatic level. Addressing system issues at the fundamental level will significantly improve the system. Symptomatic solutions may give the appearance of improvement in the short term but typically make things worse in the long run. Unfortunately we usually pick the symptomatic solutions because they seem obvious and we don't realize the long term impacts because of feedback delays that could take weeks, months or even years to realize.

    Leaders of development teams want to be able to adapt their existing product to innovative ideas and shifting market conditions. This is often the reason organizations "go Agile," yet this flexible ability to deliver rich business value is often frustratingly out of reach.

    Agile teams and their management are also familiar with the value of individual development practices. For example, Test-Driven Development's ability to catch defects early, and to provide the team with the ability to confidently extend the product. What Rob has found by working with a number of teams, each for six months or more, is another much greater--and more rare--source of business value resulting from diligent attention to software craftsmanship and the resulting two-way trust that forms between Development and Product.

    You will hear a handful of surprising (but real) first-person tales, each detailing a time when changing market forces, dramatic pivots, disruptive technological changes, or insightful requests were managed by the delivery team within a single two-week sprint.
