Brewing Great Agile Team Dynamics--No More Bitter Beer Face Communications

›Ever find yourself making a sour face after talking to a coworker? Wishing your team meetings felt more like an engaging social hour? There is hope. Those everyday conflicts where something seems “off” after a conversation are often related to differences in communication styles. When team members understand themselves and others, there’s less conflict, more collaboration, and better working relationships. The DiSC model can help you understand why your team behaves the way it does and how to build trust for a more agile team.
In this interactive session, agile coaches Allison Pollard and Barry Forrest will introduce the DiSC model to explain the four behavior types that are the ingredients in any team, then explore the characteristics of these ingredients and how they react with one another. Join them to learn about the behavior styles of you and your team using DiSC, how to communicate better together, and increase trust in the team. You'll leave with a common language that your team can use to better understand themselves and adapt their behaviors with others.

Outline/Structure of the Workshop

›3 – speaker intros, agenda for the session
›7 – group discussion of how communication within a team can build or break trust
›15 – we will lead an activity for attendees to identify their dominant DISC style and explore the model as a group to review each of the 4 behavior styles. In this section, we will touch on what coaching might sound like from each dominant behavior
›10 – we will show how to plot team members’ dominant DISC behaviors on a graph to see where conflicts are likely to occur within the team and recognize how to adapt your communication style to suit the team.
›10 – wrap-up and takeaways

      I'd like to know what concerns do you have.
       
      We had a standing room only session in Austin, with more than 80 attendees, for Keep Austin Agile. Feedback from the attendees was resoundingly positive. Sixty-seven attendees completed the survey. For content relevance, we scored 8.8 of 10. Attendees were willing to recommend our session to coworkers (8.8 of 10). We can create a canvas to better structure the 4 stations but are worried about changing the facilitation significantly to be group table activities given the short session length. Our bigger "Ah-ha!" moments have come from the cross-learning when a tribe of a behavior style shares their insights with the rest of the participants.

    I like these aspects of the submission, and they should be retained:

    • DISC model is a great topic for discussion

    I think the submission could be improved by:

    • Creating a Model for teams to work at their table since most rooms hold 50+ people.  Maybe 1 rotation to another table

      Thanks for the comment, Bob. Barry and I have used this format successfully at Keep Austin Agile, AgileIndy, and Agile Dev West. We've considered creating a "canvas" for a different type of workshop experience, which would enable people to work at their tables rather than standing in groups.

    Agile encourages us to eliminate activities that don’t add value and find the simplest solution possible to solve our business needs. For many teams, that can lead to a state where collaborative design no longer happens or is discussed on a whiteboard that gets erased after the conversation.
