Self Care Tips and Practices for the Agile Mind: From a Therapist and Coach

In order to be an effective coach, it is important to maintain and sharpen your core tool, you.This means attending to every aspect of you including mental health. Practicing good mental hygiene through self-care is one way to maintain an agile mind.There are no set rules for practicing self-care but it is important to establish some markers for how you continue to nurture your relationship with self. Unfortunately, many of us don’t recognize this need.We simply jump from event to event or engagement to engagement without ensuring we are whole, present and charged.This despite one of the essential values of Agility being, ‘maintaining a sustainable pace’.It doesn’t just apply to the teams we are coaching, but for the coach as well.

Come hear self care techniques from a practicing Agile coach and a practicing therapist?Join us as we explore practical self care practices applied to the Agile principles and typical stressors that show up while we partner with organizations to grow.Our hope is the workshop will provide an experiential space for participants to gain tools to kick start or add to their mental and emotional wellness regimen.

 
 

Outline/Structure of the Workshop/Game

Set the Stage (10 mins)
- Grounding Moment before we begin (3min Exercise: Follow Your Breath)
- What is Self Care (mind/body/spirit components): define self-care and provide examples of common practices
- Why is it important
- What we’ll experience through this session


Common Coaching Stressors (25min)
- Define a few common stressors typically experienced by practitioners during organizational change
- Apply self care practices when these stressors show up, ie Establishing trust between Coach and Organization
- How to recognize the stressors/How they show up
- Exercises and techniques to prevent and/or reduce the stressors: focus will be on exercises that can be done in any space including in the office

Mind Body Connection (Finding Your Truth: sensing how thoughts show up in the body)

Closing ( 10 mins)
- Wheel of Self-Care Challenge Activity (5 mins Exercise): What’s a self care practice you will integrate? Participants will be provided a Wellness Wheel to complete. Participants will select one domain and write down one thing they will practice . Share it with a friend to develop and Accountability Buddy .

    Many people have implemented successful agile transformations in a federal agency on a project or program, some even converting entire agencies. Then they tried to take that method and apply it to another program or agency - and failed. What went wrong? Most government agencies are roughly the same size as a company, Departments are collections of companies, and the entire federal government is massive at a scale beyond most enterprise changes. Just like companies, each agency has unique cultural differences and technical proficiencies. But there are overall federal practices and ideas that can help with an agile transformation.
    Are the governance practices from USCIS adoptable in other agencies? Can the leadership champion at FBI Sentinel be duplicated? Is the recovery from healthcare.gov something that should be emulated on other programs?
    Based on discussions with many federal employees and a few contractors working in various agencies, including Departments of Homeland Security, Defense, Treasury, Transportation, the Intelligence Community and others, this talk will dissect and analyze anecdotes and stories across various federal agencies with advice on what seems to work universally, what seem to be anti-patterns, and what is very agency specific.
    We looked across several vital areas for agile adoption and transformation: technical practices, leadership engagement, governance, procurement, and mindset. For each area, we will summarize, with specific examples from federal agencies, practices that have worked across multiple agencies, practices that have seen success in one or two agencies, and practices that have not been successful at any agency in promoting change.

    Many agile talks are about the benefits of cross-functional teams and integrating them with your business and changing their structure to better align to the value delivery. And amazing things happen with you get all of this stuff working together. There are industries and organizations that can't do this. So how do they actually get the benefits of modern agile ways of working and delivering products while continuing to use contractors for most of the work?

    This talk will focus on 3 areas of achieving most of the benefits of modern agile work while continuing to use contracted work. First, how to decide what to outsource. The decision of which pieces or work to use contractors for is the most important. Second, how to actually hire contractors. The procurement process can be evolved to be more agile and to encourage finding contractors that will drive toward the desired collaboration. Finally, how to manage and work with contractors. The day to day grind of working where real delivery will be accomplished.

    Getting benefits from an agile framework and delivery is important and can still be achieved when some of the work is outsourced and the importance of defining and finding the right contractor are vital to achieving the desired success.
