Agile Change at a Fortune 50 company: PepsiCo - a Case Study

For the past two years August, a small Brooklyn-based consultancy, has been working in partnership with Global Leadership at PepsiCo to build a movement toward a radical new way of working and organising. We call this movement “Responsive Working,” a framework of practices and mindsets rooted firmly in Agile that have enabled PepsiCo to work faster and produce better results.

Ignited by just 3 August consultants, in 18 months, the easy-to-adopt set of practices has changed the working mindsets of tens of thousands of employees in over 60 cities globally. The practices are inspirational and impactful enough that they have spread organically: teams have raised their hands and individuals have evangelized the shift without incentives. Teams are now able to build capacity to learn and coach themselves.

PepsiCo is halving time spent in meetings, and using digital tools to empower individuals and open up information and communication channels. Projects are now completed by teams that are self-organizing, lean, autonomous and multi-disciplinary and have a clearly-defined mission. Employees are empowered and engaged like never before.

In this discussion, one member of the August team and one member of the PepsiCo team (specific individuals will be confirmed closer to the date) who are responsible for the journey will be vulnerably sharing what is possible for a large organisation willing to change, and some of the practices and mindsets that made this change possible.
