SAFeban - Scaling When SAFe Doesn't Fit
While Scaled Agile Framework provides a starting point for scaling, there are many situations where it either doesn't fit or isn't enough. The SAFeban approach combines the ideas of SAFe, Scrum, and Kanban at scale to address the need for just in time planning and coordination. My experience comes from scaling Agile programs where we're coordinating the work of hundreds of people across many small global software and hardware programs at Cisco, Carestream Healthcare, and Honeywell. When these programs are highly distributed and very loosely coordinated, it isn't feasible to implement SAFe PI planning and similar practices. Instead, you need a much more just-in-time approach. SAFeban provides an approach to doing this that also addresses the day-to-day coordination issues not addressed by SAFe. Finally, SAFeban holistically addresses the issues of coordination between functions outside of R&D such as finance, marketing, product management, hosting, operations, regulatory, and customer support.
