Risk and Reward: Developing Ecosystems for Entrepreneurs

The dream of driving change or creating something new compels many people to take on the risks of entrepreneurship. Our job is to help them, and ourselves, succeed and thrive. People who are working with entrepreneurs, or family businesses, are personally driving change, or, are doing research in these areas are encouraged to submit a proposal for this year’s SCP Conference in Philadelphia, PA. SCP 2020 will have four tracks that highlight how consulting psychologists shape the people, networks, communities, and systems that facilitate entrepreneurship:
- Psychologist as Entrepreneur
- Family Business: Change and Growth
- Working with Entrepreneurs and Their Teams
- The Larger Context: Leadership, Finance, Policy, and Organizations
Session formats include: Concurrent (Individual or Group) sessions, panels, facilitated discussions, posters, and workshops. Content that integrates the critical issue of diversity and inclusion will always be considered a plus in the submission evaluation process.
Psychologist as Entrepreneur: Psychologists leverage their expertise by becoming consultants, innovating in organizations as practitioners and researchers, and by building their own businesses. If you have insights on how to help psychologists manage the roles of being psychologist and leader/manager, run better businesses, or bring their products to market then submit to this track.
Family Business Change and Growth: Family businesses are at the core of the entrepreneurial landscape. If you conduct research or consult to family businesses on succession planning, managing the impact of wealth on the family, mitigating the tensions between the family and business ecosystems, or similar activities, then submit to this track.
Working with Entrepreneurs and Their Teams: The entrepreneurial ethos – as a new start-up or within an existing business - begins as a single, possibly shared, idea to make our lives, communities, countries, or the world just a little better. If you are a coach, consultant, applied researcher, or community influencer who is directly working with entrepreneurs or their teams, then submit to this track.
The Larger Context: Leadership, Finance, Policy, and Organizations: What does it take to help entrepreneurs and their vision thrive? What systems and influencers need to be engaged for the best outcomes to be possible? If you are an internal or external consultant or researcher focused on answering questions around entrepreneurial ecosystems, organizational culture, or the roles of certain actors, then submit to this track.
*We will always consider exciting or groundbreaking proposals in other areas.
2020 Workshop Special Emphasis:
Owning Your Role as a Consultant and Leader
Why should I care about consulting? In addition to Workshops that are consistent with the conference theme, for 2020 the Society of Consulting Psychology is creating a slate of workshop offerings for psychologists of all kinds who want to run their business better or want to more ethically and competently transition into the business of coaching and organization consulting psychology. These workshops may include creating business plans, developing value propositions that inform business models, marketing your practice, performance management of clinical and consulting staff, or the ethical inclusion of coaching and consulting as an adjunct to clinical practice. We are particularly interested in the challenges of inclusiveness and intersectionality in these transitions.
