Exploring System with Casual Loop Diagram
To get a Casual Loop Diagram up, and to get the data of the model usable, you will need some basic understanding of the concepts of System Dynamics Modelling. When doing it right, it can generate discoveries which in turn can give you some really strong insights. You might get challenged in your beliefs.
We will go through a simple example showing the technique of Casual Loop Diagram and explaining how to use it. Given a set of variables in the context of a software team, we will explore how these variables affect the teams ability to deliver.
Outline/Structure of the Fast Games
Facilitator (me) tell a story about challenges to reach through to people in a controlling (waterfall if you like) context (1 min)
A simple example on a system dynamics model is presented. (1 min)
The whiteboard is handed over to the group, together with set of variables written on index cards. Not more than 7-8 cards would likely be feasable (3 mins)
Group puts the index cards up on board and draws arrows between them (5 mins)
Any cycles are identified, and variables are quantified, 0/100 (5 mins)
Any other insights from the graph? Discussion (5 min)
Learning Outcome
Casual Loop Diagram can be a super powerful tool to help in getting through peoples determined views of things, a way to get people to get insights coming from the inside (in contrast to telling).
The hope for this exercise is to communicate the tool called Casual Loop Diagram to fellow change agents.
Outcome for the participants is to get another tool in the toolbox.
Target Audience
Anyone interested to understand more about System Dynamics and the Casual Loop Diagram. It is targeted for beginners to System Dynamics.
