Although the DevOps movement is largely associated with technology and software development and delivery processes, all organizations can benefit from the cultural foundations that foster trust and cooperation to enable the delivery of quality goods and services at velocity. This workshop explores the cultural and foundational aspects of what makes DevOps movements successful, regardless of where they are implemented, and why these are important. Hint: they are predictive of individual, team, and organizational performance.

Nicole will cover these essential components of DevOps culture, and lead the group in exercises to identify which components are strongest in their own teams. She will then present strategies to support and grow areas that can be improved upon.

This workshop is highly participatory, with activities that include:

  • exploration and assessment of organizational culture using validated tools,
  • practice developing and communicating the importance of culture in DevOps transformations
  • stories and case studies about the importance of culture and its impact on tooling and practice
  • a discussion of how metrics plays a central role in culture, including real-world examples
  • team exercises in developing metrics to support DevOps
  • common challenges surrounding metrics and culture

As a trained facilitator, Nicole comes prepared to also take the group in another direction if the discussion leads them there -- it really is Choose Your Own Adventure.

Outline/Structure of the Workshop

Some of this is subject to change based on the needs and desires of the group. Some of this I also hope to keep a bit secret so the group hasn't overthought it before the session.

  •  Introductions
    • understand the group and how to best position the content for the day
  • Define what DevOps is -- for the industry, and for us
  • Explore Organizational Cultures
  • Communicating the value of culture in DevOps transformations in your org. aka why it isn't just tooling
  • Case studies and examples
  • Metrics: how-tos, as communication and alignment tools, and as a foundation for culture
  • Impactful examples that we can use tomorrow: stand-up, retrospectives

Learning Outcome

The goal is for everyone to come away with one or a few things:

  • an understanding of what we mean when we say "Culture" in DevOps
  • why culture matters in DevOps transformations
  • some tools and techniques we can use today
  • some resources to continue learning in the future

Nope, this session has nothing to do with user-stories. Rather, it's about everyday, "did I tell you about ...", stories - the kind you find in jokes, cartoons, novels and conversation - and how to use them to implement Agile in a non-threatening, yet surprisingly sticky way. You'll learn a little theory, you'll have a laugh, and you'll learn (at least) one story which will, one day, save your butt.
