How to combine scaled frameworks with distributed teams
One of the questions that many people working in large enterprises have is: how do I scale agile or scrum? There are quite some scaling frameworks out there today.
The question that not all the frameworks (and consultants implementing the framework) answer, is: how does the scaled framework combine with distributed teams?
Most frameworks favor collocated teams. And of course that's a lot easier. But today's reality is that teams are spread out all over the world. This adds complexity in terms of communication, culture, tools, roles and more.
In this session we'll share some hands on experience using LeSS and SAFe (scaled agile).
We offer a distributed agile canvas that can be used in combination with the scaling frameworks. You'll leave with practical tips and tools.
Outline/Structure of the Talk
Ebin John has over a decade experience working in large enterprises. He is working as an Agile coach for GE Healthcare digital. He has experience with SaFe implementation for large enterprise. Ebin is also a SaFe certified consultant. He also participated in LeSS framework implementation in another large scale enterprise. He also experimented with a hybrid model for scaling agile for not so large distributed teams ( 2 to 4 teams). We will start this session with some of the learnings Ebin has gathered over the years about scaling and distribution. He'll share his experience and knowledge on LeSS, SAFe and the hybrid model.
Ebin will share his perspective about these 3 different experience. We are putting some genuine effort to bring out the difference between these frameworks without any biases.
LeSS:
- Why did we choose this framework and how do I perceive this framework.
- My experience as a team member, Scrum Master and also as a APO in the implementation.
- pros and cons.
SAFe:
- Why did we choose this framework and how do I perceive this framework.
- My experience as an Agile coach helping the team to adopt the practices and principles
- pros and cons.
Hybrid Model:
- Why did we choose this framework and how do I perceive this framework.
- My experience as an Agile coach to design a model for distributed teams.
- pros and cons.
Hugo Messer has been working with distributed teams for over a decade. He's written 6 books about managing remote teams and developed a distributed team canvas. In this session, Hugo will share some of the common challenges distributed setups face. He’ll then share some solutions enterprises can use to bridge the gaps.
He will share how his canvas can help organizations facilitate distributed collaboration in a scaled setup. The canvas has 8 building blocks, which represent the areas distributed organizations need to address. We'll then look at some of the blocks and share practical solutions that have helped other organizations combine scaled setups with distributed teams.
- Roles: how do roles need to be adjusted within the scaled framework? What role needs to be located where?
- Culture: what can be done to bridge cultural differences
- Tools: what tools are needed to make distributed teams communicate smoothly
- Communication rhythm: what extra events do we need to add to each framework to create alignment?
- Knowledge transfer: What can we add to the frameworks to assure everyone understands the product deeply?
Learning Outcome
- Learn some pros and cons of the different scaled frameworks
- Practical cases where scaling is combined with distribution
- How to combine scaling with distributed teams
- How to apply the distributed agile canvas
Target Audience
