In the late 90s, I read one of the first published books on agile development and finally had a framework for what already seemed so natural. An eagerness to share what I had discovered led me to SoftEd, where I developed some of the early courses, including the first agile course ever taught in the Southern Hemisphere.  

After 15 years at SoftEd, I became the Director of Agile Learning Programs at the International Consortium for Agile (ICAgile), helping to create a high standard for agile learning and certifications.  

With newfound inspiration, I felt the pull to get back in the classroom and returned to SoftEd as the Global Delivery Lead. Drawing on over 35 years of experience in business analysis, product development, and organisational change, I love guiding people as they transform from traditional to modern, more healthy ways of working.  

Getting the opportunity to connect with agile thought leaders and communities around the world is what keeps me energised. High-quality automated unit tests are one of the key development practices that enable incremental development and delivery of software. xUnit is the generic name given to the family of tools/frameworks used by developers when developing automated unit tests. JUnit, NUnit, MsTest and CppUnit are some of the better-known members of the family.

This 1-day workshop provides the participants with a vocabulary of test smells and patterns with which to elevate their craft when writing or refactoring test code. These smells give them a way to reason about the quality of their test code. The reusable test code design patterns can be used to eliminate the smells. The emphasis will be on refactoring tests to make them easier to understand and maintain.

The workshop introduces a systematic way to identify the test conditions the software needs to handle and how to prepare tests that clearly describe those test conditions in a human-readable way so that the tests can act as effective documentation of what the software should do and what it’s design should be.

For this workshop, Ken and Varsha will provide a cloud-based instance of the continuous delivery server GoCD for you to learn on. You will configure a complete continuous delivery pipeline from source code commit through deployment. Learn when to run each common type of automated test for the fastest possible feedback and how to run tests in parallel for shorter cycle times. Moving from practice to theory, Ken explores industry studies and peer-reviewed scientific research that show the value of practicing continuous delivery and adopting a DevOps culture. He describes how the need for CD developed and then fed the requirements for culture change to support DevOps and CD practices.

She is a design and product leader who spent the last 20 years at large multi-national Tech start-ups leading their Design, Innovation and Product Management functions. Deepa helped pioneer Design Thinking at Intuit working closely with Intuit Co-Founder, Scott Cook. Fasal helps farmers gain a competitive edge in the marketplace by providing them with pricing and other agricultural advisory information.

James Stewart is a partner at digital transformation consultancy Public Digital, where he helps institutions that matter find the momentum to transform for the modern era. His work spans sectors, from governments, to international institutions, to media, retail, pharma and financial services.

Previously James was a co-founder of the Government Digital Service and Deputy CTO of the UK Government. He was responsible for the technical architecture of the award-winning GOV.UK, building the acclaimed team behind it, supporting the delivery of dozens of projects across government and transforming the UK Government’s relationship with open source by “coding in the open.”

Working across government, he helped make the move toward a more user-centric and platform-based architecture for government services. He’s been instrumental in the UK government’s move to use of public cloud, reform of network policy and coordinating the network of senior technology leaders across government.

The technical work he has led has underpinned solutions that have won a variety of awards including the Design Museum’s Design of the Year and a D&AD Black Pencil. The work of GDS was described by O’Reilly Radar as “the default for how government should approach their online efforts in the 21st century”, it saved the UK £4.1bn in just three years, and has inspired similar initiatives around the globe.

James is a non-executive advisor to the UK's parliament. Previously he was a member of GitHub‘s Customer Advisory Board and represented the UK government at the W3C. Prior to joining the civil service James ran an agency providing websites, business tools and product development to a range of small businesses, charities and entertainment industry clients.
