Ramkumar Venkatesan - Spurring growth with an Agile culture

    45 Mins

Startups have been and will be a big factor in powering India to be a $5 trillion economy. Startups have a need to grow the customer base, product offerings, scale their technology and grow the teams.  Succeeding in all of these parameters in a rapidly evolving environment is what makes startups successful. Agility enables startups to conquer these challenges. An agile culture is very important for successful Agility. The 3 pillars of building such a culture are alignment of goals, decentralised decisioning to attain those goals and a continuous feedback loop on decisions’ outcomes.

1. What got you started/interested in modern software development methods?

Relatively, software engineering is a young industry and hence there is still lot of scope in improving the software development methods. Software product competition can be compared with high stakes premium sports. Difference between the winners and losers are razor thin and will be < 5%. This razor thin edge is significantly influenced by modern software development methods and hence very interesting to learn and master.

2. What do you think is the biggest challenge faced by the software product engineering community today?

Everything is possible technologically, and is also possible in numerous ways, thus greatly reducing entry barriers for innovation. This makes it flat and enhances the competition amongst products and companies. This is exciting and also the biggest challenge to constantly differentiate, maintain the differential lead and winning markets.

3. What do you think are the most exciting developments in software product engineering today?

Software product engineering is witnessing so many changes in terms of technology available. In addition, it is enabling exciting changes in every domain from fintech, edu-tech, health and the environment.

It is exciting to be able to utilise new technology on the input side, and create awesome outcomes in all walks of life.

4. Why did you choose the topic(s) you will be speaking about at the conference?

The opportunities available in front of Software product companies has never been more. The impact that can be had by SaaS companies are exciting.

I believe that in the long term, the companies that innovate most are going to succeed. Agility is actually inseparable and should not be separated from Innovation.

The culture of the teams and how it transforms along with growth becomes a key challenge and differentiator.

5. What are some of the key takeaways from your session(s) at Agile India?

I will be sharing recipes for scaling Agility that is focussed on building an Agile culture through Alignment of goals, decentralised decisioning and continuous feedback on decisions' outcomes
