“One mission One Team” – Fostering Collaboration in Complex Federal Environments
In the Federal space, it is often a mix of government staff, multiple contractors and subcontractors making up an Agile projects and teams. While collaboration is a key pillar of an Agile mindset, it can be a challenge to build a collaborative environment in such a multi-entity environment. This talk will cover several case studies and will present:
- How we successfully trained many teams of blended entities through a robust learning roadmap that covered everyone regardless of employer
- How we worked to establish a ‘one team’ mindset through team building workshops and collaboration exercises
- How we worked to establish cross functional collaborative teams, team norms, etc in a multi-contractor environment.
- Successes, failures and lessons learned

Have you ever tried hopping onto a moving train? That is what it feels like for those of us who join dysfunctional Agile projects already in motion. Everything is moving really quickly, but you don’t know exactly where you’re going. For that reason, you attempt to figure out a few things:
- What are the project/team issues - does the team even know what Scrum is?

A situation like this would call for a Agile mindset. But what does it really mean to have an Agile mindset and what does it look like?
This talk will outline some techniques for employing an Agile mindset when considering the people, process and tools of an inflight project from several different angles. I will also discuss some lessons learned from working with government partners in a not-so Agile environment.

Agile adoption can be very challenging and many companies run into various issues on the path to transforming their organizations. Scrum is one of the most common Agile frameworks and is the focus of this talk.
A lot of new teams are failing to start with creating a healthy backlog which is a backbone of a Scrum project (properly sliced stories, clear prioritization, non-functional work etc.)
Others are trying to tailor their processes to the selected agile software management tools rather than focusing on practices that can increase team’s velocity and product quality.
The goal of this talk is to have an interactive discussion about lessons learned and best practices that can be helpful in implementing Scrum as well as sustaining it in a more efficient and stress-less way.
