Everyone loves stories whether it's a child or an adult. Best leaders, coaches, teachers, speakers and parents are good storytellers. Good stories engage people completely and spark their imagination. Human beings relate to stories well, so if a topic is presented in the form of a story, it can communicate the message in a great way and it will stick in their minds.

When I work with agile coaches, ScrumMasters, Product Owners and technologists, I found that brief stories that relate to a specific topic are very valuable in conveying the message since stories contain images and emotions. What I found is, you don't have to be a born storyteller (I wasn't one), it can be practiced. In this workshop, I will facilitate a story-writing and story telling activity/exercise about agile.


Outline/Structure of the Workshop

  • Introduction - 2 min.
  • Storytelling and Brain Science - 5 min.
    • Quick activity on a great story and recall
    • Shout out from participants on key points of story-telling


  • Participants pick a topic on agile at their table (it will be different topics at each table based on the number of participants) - 2 min.
  • Brainstorm ideas on creating a story for their agile topic - 4 min.
  • Story-writing - 12 min.
  • Story-telling - 3 to 4 min. (depending on number of teams) - 18 min (30 seconds to setup in between)
  • Summary - 2 min.

The story-writing and story-telling times will be adjusted based on the number of participants/teams at each table.

I will add another activity appropriately, if needed.

Learning Outcome

Participants will learn to brain-storm story ideas that relate to a topic in agile and write stories in a team setting collaborating with each other on their ideas. Participants will be able to prepare and tell stories in their organizations to effectively contribute to their agile transformation and/or training. Participants will also be able to share their story with others in the room using several methods of conveying their story - story-telling, illustrations/drawings, emotions, acting etc.

Prerequisites for Attendees

Participants bring their imagination and enthusiasm, experiences working in an agile environment, interest in story-writing and story-telling.
