At it's heart; Story Mapping is a system view, and an MVP plan, and enhancement plan... and a release plan.. and and and; the list goes on.
Originally designed in 2005 by Jeff Patton; this recognised and widely used agile business process will help teams at any stage of development visualise their complete project and then develop milestones or releases to suit the cadence of their sprints or iterations. The technique also allows architects, developers and business people to be on the same page with their understanding of progress through the development of a feature or service.
The "map" arranges user activities on feature cards, or system architecture along the horizontal axis in rough order of priority (or "the order in which you would describe activities to explain the behaviour of the system"). Down the vertical axis, it represents increasing sophistication of the implementation.
As a tool to create a clear overview of the stages of development, including what's finished and what's not; it's incomparable, easy to set up and fast to update - No Electronics Required!

 
 

Outline/Structure of the Workshop

This session will be a 60 min Workshop, structured around a 15 minute formal talk that introduces the history of the storymap and some of the benefits using real-world examples of maps I have facilitated within teams, a brief dive into how to construct a map, and then 45min team based session to design a fast map based on using the real world activity of getting ready to go to work.

There will be a brief 15 min Q&A at the end of the session to tease out any missing info. The session will be supported visually with Haikudeck, and then released to the public along with downloadable content and high quality instructions/diagrams that explain the concept in more detail after completion.

  1. How to create and maintain a quality story map.
  2. How to visualise systems and enhancements.
  3. How to define the Minimum Viable Product from a map.
  4. How to implement and link the map to development cycles.
  5. How to run a simple mapping workshop based around the material I will provide.
