Have you ever been in a retrospective where everyone looks at each other and not saying anything meaningful? No one wants to be the first to point out the “elephant in the room”. By the end of the hour, real issues are not discussed. The team feels demotivated and they are dreading the next one.

A lot of people do not enjoy retrospectives, seeing them as a way to place blame. It does not need to be this way.

Retrospectives should be a place to have open conversations which promote constructive actions that help the team improve. One of the ways to start the discussion is by using LEGO® to share your perspectives.

In this session, I would like to share a retrospective technique using LEGO® bricks. Hope you bring your inner child.


Outline/Structure of the Workshop

I plan to demonstrate the 3 basic phases of LSP process using the windows explorations bag: Challenge, Build, Share. As a 75 minutes workshop, I plan to run the session in the following format:

00:00 Introduction to LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® (Including a brief "the science of LSP")

Get familiar with the bricks
00:05 Build a bridge, discuss with neighbors (This is to get people to be comfortable around the bricks)
00:10 Build from instructions, discuss with neighbors (A more complex build to increase skill level, instructions will be provided)

00:15 Build on top of the previous model, discuss with neighbors (Using the model from the previous build, add to it and create a story to share)

Retrospective Segment
00:20 Think of open-ended questions that are helpful during a retrospective: What went well in the last iteration? What was the biggest challenge? If you can change one thing, what would that be? What did you learn?

00:30 Each group chooses 3 questions to use.

00:35 Build base on open question #1, discuss with table (Everyone gets a chance to share their story, others may ask questions about the model. Depends on the size of the groups, participants will be encouraged to move quickly through each round)

00:45 Build base on open question #2, discuss with table

00:55 Build base on open question #3, discuss with table (Now in an actual retrospective, team members may take turns noting down each story. The team can collect actionable improvements as they go through each round of open-ended questions. It's also important to allow enough time for deeper discussions. Participants can keep these suggestions in mind in their next session with LEGO®.)
