In a team aligned by layer rather than product, thin vertical slicing was a foreign concept that “wouldn't work” in our context. With a new project came a new opportunity to work across components in a cross-functional team. Although the UI layer was small, we were able to introduce thin vertical slices in a way that made sense for the project and for the team. In this talk we cover two distinct perspectives on introducing thin vertical slices to a team that traditionally broke up the backlog by component, i.e. ‘horizontal layers’. This is not a technical deep dive on how to create thin vertical slices. Rather, this is the story of introducing a new concept to the team, making it work in our context, the challenges we faced, and how we overcame them. The cake analogy is often used when talking about thin vertical slices, but in our experience it’s more complicated than that.

Commercial Off The Shelf (COTS) applications are a part of most (perhaps every) medium to large enterprises. A lot of money is spent every year in selection and implementation projects of such applications - think millions to billions of dollars if you consider lost opportunity costs which are hard to measure.
Unfortunately, buying instead of building is no guarantee of success. Tales of monumental package implementation overruns and disappointing functionality - not to mention outright failures - abound. These failures occur despite elaborate, detailed evaluation processes meant to select just the right package and reduce the risk of implementation. It is clear that businesses have to get better at researching, evaluating, and selecting software products.
In this talk we'll describe an approach to selecting and implementing package software that focuses on engineering quality and business agility. We prefer an approach that involves hands-on, experiential hypothesis testing and evidence gathering over endless feature checklists and vendor demonstrations.

Our moral and ethical landscape has changed greatly over the last 100 years. We used to be able to view the world very much in terms of right and wrong, black and white, but today we are constantly operating in shades of grey.
We have a recipe for disaster when this is coupled with the fact that everything in our life is now run by software. We must have a way to iterate on our values, morals, and ethics to ensure we are aware of the dilemmas we face daily and the impacts of our choices.
In this session, we will cover codifying a team's ethics to be in line with their companies’ values, and include this in their definition of done (project, feature, story). We will then discuss techniques to review and iterate on ethics in line with the usual feedback cycles.
