Getting started can seem overwhelming, but there is hope! Join us as we explore how teams have made the shift within their organization to prioritize inclusion and diversity from the ground up. Human Inclusive’s Lia James and Christopher Guest will moderate an interactive discussion with Mo Abdullah, Founder of Culture Energized, Natalie Bonifede D&I at Pivotal, Lauren Burgess, Founder and CEO of Garden, Inc and Dirt Coffee Bar. We will learn how they have shifted team culture to implement inclusive, belonging, and diversity initiatives. We will explore how they’ve made changes, what they've learned, and how others can make a similar impact on their own teams. Together we will learn:

A lot of conversation goes into acknowledging that diversity in the tech industry is an issue, but fewer conversations dig into the action-oriented solutions that we all can do to impact change. Change is hard, especially when it involves a group of people all from different cultures, backgrounds, lived experiences existing and working together in one space. There’s a tension that can arise, and if not prepared for it, it can feel counterintuitive of what the studies are saying. Investing in diversifying teams is necessary for a lot of reasons, but creating an inclusive environment can feel like a major challenge. We all can recognize why it’s important to do this work, but now we need to be talking about how to do this work.
The panel will dive into foundational content on how teams have made the shift within their organization to prioritize inclusion and diversity from the ground up. Human Inclusive’s Lia James and Christopher Guest will moderate a discussion with two - three local teams who have started to shift their teams' culture to implement diversity initiatives. We will explore how they’ve made it possible from tips on allyship to microaggression, and ways to check the pulse of your organization. Together we will learn:
- How they got started and keep their teams accountable
- What were their biggest challenges and hard-to-learn lessons
- How to approach team dynamics differently to empower diversity to thrive
- Best practices for getting everyone on board and start the process
The panel will be facilitated by co-curators, Lia James and Christopher Guest, of Human Inclusive, a podcast amplifying voices and experiences of marginalized communities. The podcast launched in November 2018 with the mission to curate stories of diverse communities to drive impactful change in the workforce and start helping people think more about the "how".

Colleen Johnson - Your Retrospective Format Doesnt Matter

As Agile coaches we often spend a lot of time coming up with varied formats for our team retrospectives however what we are really trying to achieve is gathering better data. After hosting countless retrospectives both in person and online, I started paying more attention to what types of things people were posting. I sorted through stickies, spreadsheets, and flip charts and distilled all of the types of cards posted into five key types of data that are critical to great retrospectives. These are Stats, Events, Kudos, Observations, and Past Retros. Stats look at concrete numbers and performance metrics like through put, velocity, and cycle time and give teams something measurable to improve against. Events help the team create a shared context and invite memories of what took place. Kudos for a job well done set a positive tone for the team to open up. Observations allow everyone on the team a chance to be heard and express their unique point of view. And lastly, Past retro data keeps us accountable and action-oriented in our improvements so we never get stuck. In this workshop we will walk through why each of these are important and HOW to make sure you get a good balance of all types of data.

Control freaks. We’ve either called someone that name or been the recipient of that moniker. I used to think it was a personality trait only a few possessed. Often reserved for someone who can’t seem let go of the steering wheel, or listen to the advice of others with an open mind. These are the people that are resistant to change and our harshest critics.Those assumptions were proven wrong after reading The Control Heuristic. I learned that control was a tool that is used by everyone to manage our discomfort in situations. That we are governed by our subconscious in subtle ways and are always concerned with emotional comfort.Learning all that helped me see clients in a new light, and I would like to share what I learned. By seeing this behavior in a new light, I was able to start meeting people where they were at in the moment and partner with them in the journey to change. The book's author helps present change in a way that can allow others to be more comfortable with it.Come explore this topic with me as I present my findings. By discussing control and the reasons we exercise it, I believe we can understand better ways to help teams be comfortable with change.
