Tomo Watanabe - “You might be a great Scrum Master if…” --- A brief guide to Scrum Mastery
60 Mins
Talk
Intermediate
This session is not only for current and aspiring Scrum Masters but also for People Managers, Development Team Members, Product Owners, Project Managers, and Leaders.
The Scrum Guide defines what is expected of a Scrum Master. When you read it, I bet you react like "that's a piece of cake!" But when you actually do it, many of us come to a realization that it's really, really hard. (That's what happened to me!) The Scrum Master job is hard because much of it has to do with humans, one of the most complex beings in the universe. Humans are intelligent; humans have emotions; and humans are unpredictable. Just going through the motions does not cut it. Even if you approach with the best of your intention, matters could backfire on you anytime. Borrowing "You might be a redneck if..." from a comedian, Jeff Foxworthy, Tomo will present behaviors of a great Scrum Master and those of a "not so good" Scrum Master. Then, he will take you through why the great Scrum Master's behaviors make her great and how they contribute to building a high performing team and helping the organization be more effective and productive. Finally, he will share tips and tricks that help Scrum Masters grow into greatness (for example, powerful questions, 3 levels of listening, facilitation tools & techniques, etc.)!
This session will give current and aspiring Scrum Masters what to focus on for career development and people in other roles a concrete idea on what qualities to look for in a Scrum Master.
There will be a handout for participants to take home with.

Natalie A Warnert - Increasing Diversity and Inclusion with Women in Agile - The Women in Agile Story from MVP to Non Profit
60 Mins
Talk
Intermediate
Women in Agile started like most movements do, with a problem and a small grassroots effort which was not on the leading edge. Now it has grown to a leading non-profit organization with local groups across the world and many conference pairings under its belt all in a timeframe of a few years. Women in Agile utilized leading-edge MVP/lean startup targeted experiments to determine how to expand meaningfully and sustainably while examining data and experience collected along the way. While the need for diversity is nothing new, the way Women in Agile approached the inclusion of new and diverse ideas is! All genders are welcome, included, and valued in participating and learning to be better allies to each other! Women in Agile turns no one away and is different in the way we lead through empowering the community - anyone can start a Women in Agile group, join, and receive support! This session discusses how Women in Agile got to where it is today, what is in store for the future, and how you can take our lessons learned to grow organizations and ideas in a successful and sustainable way and get yourself or your community involved in making a change. We will be using the Denver group leaders as a shining example of a thriving group and will examine their unique learnings as part of the session. -

Rich Stewart - Activate Your Brain with Diet and Agile
60 Mins
Talk
Intermediate
Our knowledge of the human brain is advancing rapidly due to research in neuroscience. There is now good understanding of how our lifestyle choices and the way we interact with others can have a significant impact on our short and long-term health as well as on our brain function. Drawing from the bestselling book of author Scott Halford’s Activate Your Brain: How Understanding Your Brain Can Improve Your Work - and Your Life, which I wrote about at length in a recent article, I examine two factors that impact the chemicals released in the brain, which in turn impact our cognitive abilities. I first look at the impact of diet and the food choices we make every day. I then focus on how working within an Agile context positively impacts the production of hormones including oxytocin, norepinephrine, and dopamine through ways of working that builds trust through collaboration, maintains engagement by breaking up work into small user stories, and results in short-term accomplishments through completion of iteration goals.

Manuel G. Segarra III - " Scrum 2 SAFe : The 'ART' of the Launch "
120 Mins
Workshop
Intermediate
Scrum 2 SAFe : The 'ART' of the Launch, is a 3 step process in helping people transition from the world of Scrum to SAFe. This approach provides clarity and purpose with the intent of introducing the metaphor of Trains.
Trains transport people and cargo, with the mission of safe and timely arrivals and departures, i.e. "Running on Time". Do you know anyone who was happy and excited to wait for a late train !? Many of the obstacles of software development were experienced by those building the history of the railroads in America; delays, missed deadlines, production issues, biases, political roadblocks, poor management, disengaged workforce, low quality of work, etc.
Using the Train Metaphor, Scrum 2 SAFe will provide the following toolkit:
- Engaging simulation to understand the activities to move from Scrum 2 SAFe
- Visualization tool to monitor progress of identified activities
- Visualization tool to monitor progress towards the launch of the ART
- Immersive ART launch
