How can you overcome the resistance and roadblocks to Agility deployed by your organization’s cultural ‘anti-bodies’? How can you move past Scrum-erfall, Wagile, Fragile, Scrum-But, or Dark Scrum? Learn how to assess your organization’s culture using the Competing Values Framework, and how to avoid much of the resistance to Agile by aligning your strategy with the organization’s established cultural values. In order to achieve sustainable Agility, though, you may need some shifts in culture. We will learn a framework for gently nudging your culture: the V2MOM (Vision, Values, Measures, Obstacles, & Methods). V2MOM is a practical technique that can be used by anyone at any level within an organization.

 
 

Outline/Structure of the Workshop

  1. Introduction to the Competing Values Framework. Participants will do a Gallery Walk activity to learn about the four culture archetypes in CVF. (15 minutes)
  2. I will show how each of the four culture types (Collaborative, Creative, Competing, & Controlling) align with various Agile principles & values. I will show how to align your Agile change strategy with the organization’s existing cultural values by emphasizing particular Agile practices and principles over others. (10 minutes)
  3. Activity: Participants form small groups based on their organization's dominant culture type. Each group identifies specific Agile practices, metrics and policies that align well with their current culture, and create a poster to summarize their work. (20 minutes).
  4. Activity: Gallery Walk. Participants view posters created by other groups to absorb more useful ideas. (10 minutes)
  5. Concept introduction: I will explain the idea of inside-out culture change: influencing culture by experimenting with metrics, policies and structures. (5 minutes)
  6. Card sort activity: Participants will form groups according to the cultural values they want to strengthen. Groups do a card sorting activity to learn examples of experiments they might run to change metrics, policies & structures - with the goal of shifting culture. (15 minutes)
  7. Introduction to V2MOM. I will explain the structure of V2MOM and describe how it can be used to design an experiment for making small changes in the culture. (5 minutes)
  8. Group activity. Participants will form small groups and each group will design a culture-change experiment using V2MOM. (25 minutes)
  9. Conclusion. A few groups will summarize their experiment with the whole room. Q&A. (10 minutes)
