Millennials, also known as Generation Y or Gen Y, are the generational demographic cohort following Generation X and preceding Generation Z who were born in early 1980s. Millennials are currently 25% of APAC workforcea and not only that, Millennials now have the most spending power of any generation, which means that creating a work environment that they can thrive in matters more than ever.

Let's see some of the interesting charcateristics of millennial,

  • Collaborative:
    • They send a median of 50 texts a day.
  • Socially connected:
    • They have the highest average number of Facebook friends, with an average of 250 friends vs. Generations X's 200.
  • Multi-taskers:
    • In the age of information overload, millennials are able to consume and assimilate more information than ever.
  • Tech Savvy:
    • With an internet enabled smartphone, they spend roughly around 4 hours per day consuming the online content through app or browsers.

and much more. As more and more millennials enter the workforce and redefine the workplace productivity, how can organization and agile coaches prepare themselves to nurture and coach the millennials to realize organization/project goals and deliver value to business?

I will also talk about the challenges while dealing the millennials (as compared to Gen X workers who were managed from top-down), coaching models, skills that can help agile coaches to maximize the potential of the millennials, exploiting the characteristics of the millennials to improve productivity and do's and don't while coaching millennials.

I've presented this in one of the PlayScrum Meetups Chennai as well and have received awesome repsonse from the participants.

    Hi Ram,

    Thanks for submitting your talk.

I like these aspects of the submission, and they should be retained:

    • Skills needed by Agile Coaches to coach millennials
    • Coaching techniques, challenges

I think the submission could be improved by:

    • Can include about 10 mins  time in the presentation to relate the topics covered with real time experience scenarios which will be beneficial for the participants.

        Hi Ram,

The presentation covers Kolb's model, Goleman's model. Is it possible to include slides with references to practical scenarios from your experience of using these models. The participants will be keen to know how to get these models in practical usage.

        Regards

Sure. The Kolb's model can really help in grooming the coach or help in whoever that is aspiring to become a coach. I've used the Kolb's model to coach few of my team members and it really helped the team becoming good coaches. Similarly the Goleman's model is also useful when it comes to lead millennials on day to day conversations and conflicts within the team. I will talk about some practical scenarios while discussing these models.

I like these aspects of the submission, and they should be retained:

    • Very relevant Topic

I think the submission could be improved by:
    • Too much content to cover in 45 minutes
    • I Think Initial slides of talking Weakness & Strengths of millennial you need to provide source of the study  to bring credibility else it could be just perception based
    • I see that you are covering pretty much all the Coaching model , my recommendation is to suggest one top model which a coach should use with the tweaks require in that model.

      Hi Gaurav,

      Please see my responses below,

      • Yes, I can cut down some of the slides and give as hand-outs to the delegates to have them take it to their workplaces (like Do's and Dont's, Organizational changes etc).
      • I've taken most of the data from research website (https://www.pewresearch.org/topics/millennials/) and i will quote them in the slides where ever needed to bring in credibility.
      • I will cover only two models for coaching on the millineals which would be relevant to the presentation topic.

      Regards,

      Ramkumar

    Hi Ram,

Another feedback, can you incorporate some new scenarios/content in the presentation so that it will bring fresh perspective to the participants who would have already attended this in the meetup.

    Regards.

      Hi Javid,

I've not covered the coaching framework, models in the meetup. Those 2-3 slides would be new and exclusive for this conference. Along with the real time scenarios and framework (15-20 mins) would bring new perspectives to the delegates

      Regards,

      Ramkumar
