Why Your Teams Keep Failing, And How To Stop It
You bring a team together, give them some work, and yet they don't meet the organization's or manager's expectations. They fail to deliver, fail to jell, and fail to perform. Why? Before a team can be high-performing, they must first come together as a team. Come get real world, specific ideas on how to properly kick off a team, setting them up for success for themselves, and the business.
Outline/Structure of the Workshop
Intro & set the stage - 5 min
Identify problems: as table-groups, discuss common problems and why teams "fail". Have them scribe/summarize the problems, then do a whole-class, group debrief - 15 min
Now, as facilitators, we're going to go "meta" -- how did that process work? were you guys a 'team', at your tables? what sort of behaviours did you notice in just this short exercise? - 5 min
NOTE: maybe not as well as they had hoped, because they themselves were not a team yet!
We will give the whole class a common visions/goal/product to work towards - 10 min
Now, based on the problems identified in Step 2 above, we will selectively choose 1 -3 (depending on timing) of the following list of activities. We will facilitate the whole class in working through these exercises as table groups, making each table more and more a 'team'. This is very much a "go with the flow" moment, picking which ones of the below items to facilitate, and how many, based on the input and the time remaining in the session.
Team working agreements -- what they are and how to make them - 15 min
Team values, identifying collectivism vs. individualism - 15 min
Why Agile? Identify supports and detractors, and show them how to address what's holding them (and the team) back - 10 min
Identify Roles using containers - 15 min
Marketplace of skills - 15 min
Moving Motviators -- identify each person's individual intrinsic motivators, and how to appeal to each one as a team member - 10 min
When we reach the natural end of our session, we will make sure to leave time for a Q&A of roughly 10 min
Obviously, we won't be able to do ALL of the activities above, but this is a list that will address, we believe, the majority of the issues and problems the attendees will come up with in Step 2.
