Building, Supporting and Sustaining High -Performance Teams
Agile visionaries firmly believe that high-performance teams are the essential part of delivering the highest value to the customer, by building amazing products. But, there is no ready-made formula for building a high-performance team. From my experience, even though Organisations always put together a bunch of highly skilled specialists to achieve an outcome, most of the time they fail as they don't even start functioning as a team. How do we build a high-performance team? What do we need as leaders, coaches, or managers to enable, create, and sustain highly successful and intelligent teams?
This workshop provides a recipe for building, supporting and sustaining high-performance teams. The key takeaways for the participants will be valuable tools and practices that can be used with any teams to make them function as a high-performance team. The workshop provides a model to understand and assess the journey of the team towards high performance and use the relevant tools to incubate and accelerate the journey. The toolkit applies to both new teams as well as existing teams. In addition, the participants will learn to work with conflicts, and how to use conflict as a true opportunity for growth and learning.

According to the 2016 State of Agile Survey the #3 cause of agile project failure is “Lack of management support” at 38%. To compound the matter, the #5 cause of prevention of further agile adoption is “Management support” at 29%. In contrast, the #2 reason for success in scaling agile is “Executive sponsorship” at 40%.

Popularised in Peter Senge’s The Fifth Discipline, causal loop diagrams provide a diagramming approach to mapping out the cause and effect landscape in a wider system.
The technique seems to have been overlooked in modern times, and yet it is a powerful tool to evaluate and discover virtuous or vicious cycles in the system and trade-off balances between opposing forces.
This technique is much more powerful and yet more subtle than the five whys or other root cause analysis techniques, and looks to map out the upstream causes and downstream effects in a dynamic environment. High-end diagrams can illustrate areas of high pressure that either perpetuate a negative loop (vicious cycle) or a positive loop (virtuous cycle.) This approach has helped me enormously in understanding how to position an Agile adoption that is sensitive the dynamics at play in a program or enterprise landscape, most often when the solution or combination of solutions are not immediately obvious.
This talk will present some simple techniques to help you to use causal loop diagrams to map out your own systems and contexts and become aware of the cause and effects within your landscape.

Dan Pink's 2009 bestseller on human motivation got it wrong. Or at least it missed a very important piece of the motivation jigsaw.
Drawing on over 40 years of academic research into Self-Determination Theory (SDT), the leading Theory of Motivation in psychology, this talk aims to give a fuller picture of the drivers of engagement.
The original paper on SDT was written by Professors Richard Ryan and Edward Deci in 1985. Since then over 40 books, hundreds of PhDs and thousands of research hours have validated the theory in numerous settings, across many cultures and in many different types of organisations. In fact, SDT is the main theoretical base that Pink draws upon for his bestselling book ‘Drive’. It’s ironic that while Pink’s bestseller is by far the most widely read book on SDT, it’s also potentially the most incomplete, highlighting a common disconnect between Popular Psychology and the underlying academic research.
Having worked directly with Professor Ryan, one of the fathers of SDT and who still today spearheads the worldwide SDT movement, Mihall O Curraoin also draws on his own academic background in Psychology, his work as an Executive Coach, as well as over 20 years’ experience coaching and working in Agile teams to bring this important theoretical approach to life for an IT audience. Expect lots of practical, evidence based tips and tricks on how to motivate yourself and your teams!
On a deeper level, the talk links SDT with core Agile principles and practices. This allows a better understanding of exactly WHY Agile works so well. In particular, the talk highlights why the principles and values (i.e. being Agile) are more important than the practices (i.e. doing Agile). The talk also provides scientific data to help secure that all-important Senior Executive buy-in for running larger-scale Agile initiatives in organisations.
