What does an ordinary communication look like from sender and receiver’s perspective? How much is and isn't being said when you are having a conversation? How do you recognise the unspoken and understand a complete perspective?

Agile folks know that communication is the backbone of a Agile culture. A team’s ability to work through adversity and navigate healthy conflict is what separates high-performing teams from mediocrity. Aside from that, learning to trust your intuition is important to learn at any point of your career.

This workshop will introduce one of the techniques from Integral facilitation that aids navigating conversations and improve common understanding in between participants.

The technique embeds four integral quadrants into conversation, thus making it easier to explore different perspectives.

    I conducted original research with Scrum teams in Australia last year as part of my Master of Management thesis (and achieved an A), to understand the causes, patterns and impacts of these interruptions on the team's effectiveness and their happiness.     The human response to change can either drive or derail agile transformation. People are complex adaptive systems and human behaviour is an emergent property that is not simply predictable from stimulus-response or input-output mechanical models. The state of the system matters a lot. Thus, the same stimulus – say – a verbal instruction, produces widely divergent responses and outcomes depending on whether a person is in a physiological state of defence or of engagement.

    The human nervous system has evolved to detect and respond to critical features of the environment - including the built and social environment, on a moment-to-moment basis, in order to support survival and development. And it does this largely outside of conscious awareness and control. The dynamic states of the human nervous system form a neural platform that enables or disables our ability to collaborate, explore, reflect and learn - the key imperatives at the Heart of Agile. Successful human interaction and development depend on our ability to regulate the states of our nervous system and to co-regulate with others.

    In a world of ever escalating complexity, we are confronted by the demand to continuously adapt our mental models, frameworks and tools in order to survive and grow – as individuals, organisations and communities.To survive and grow in complex dynamic environments, we need to change more than what we do (practices), we need to change how we are (transformation) – and to do that we need to support and develop human adaptive capabilities. Yet our schooling systems, professional training and cultural narratives typically fail to equip us for complexity and to leverage the adaptive and creative capabilities of the most complex system we engage with – the human system.

    Our adaptive capabilities are the product of more than 200 million years of mammalian evolution – of successful adaptation to complex dynamic environments. In recent years, a New View of human performance and adaptation has emerged from the convergence of many fields including Neurophysiology, Evolutionary biology, Expert Performance Under Pressure and the study of the Adaptive Unconscious.
