The importance of having direction and the right focus is not as clear cut as most companies think. Most of the time we try to fit ourselves into principles that make sense on paper but do not make sense in real life. I learned this lesson from trying to teach my 7-year-old daughter to play basketball (Trying to live my dreams through my child) and she constantly asked me why we did things a certain way when we can do it this way and this got me thinking.

This presentation is about ignoring the buzz words, lean, agile and waterfall, and understanding that these are frameworks that we should not be cramming ourselves into. But using them in a way that suits you as a team/ business. To truly realize that our way of thinking needs to be flexible and adjust outside these methodologies, so we can grow to work to our best potential.

We will talk about things we have done wrong, things we have done right and understood your teams and how they look at things, share in our experiences. Do we follow things to religiously and do we really do it right!


In essence, this presentation is about thinking like a 7-year-old and continues discovery vs What We know. It takes a look at how the team is the core of the platform and not something that fits into the latest phase we are going through.

Outline/Structure of the Talk

I have structured this presentation to relate to the people in the room while connecting with them through relatable stories and problems we have all faced as product people in teams

The presentation will run on slides:

  1. A small introduction about who I am and where this came concept came from.
  2. A story about my daughter and basketball.
  3. Talking to the audience and relating to what we have all been through - Training, CEO, Buzz Words.
  4. Ask people to share their thoughts on how they are doing their own versions of things
  5. What we know best Vs Continuous Discovery - Talking about how we should question things and look past why things work.
  6. Know that everything has a life cycle and that this relates to processes as well - Case samples and break down of how things have changed since 1992
  7. Evolving processes, not letting them die
  8. Why What Works for Us and Not what works for you

Learning Outcome

The main goal of this is to get people to think about are they doing something because it should be that way? To look at changes that can make us think of where we are going through as product people and be the change to evolve our processes and not stick to what was placed before us.

Target Audience

This is primarily targeted at software teams that know things are not always black and white or those that think it is. To offer a chance to look at things differently
