We talk about “decentralizing decision making” and “empowering teams”. And yet, we are plagued with decision making challenges and escalations that erode trust, limit performance, and reduce safety.

The Decision Box establishes boundaries around decisions so people know what options are on the table. If I asked you to buy me a car, but didn't give you any parameters, how would you proceed? If instead I told you that I require: cost < $50,000; open to a used vehicle; 6 seats; utility and safety, you are now able to make decisions without escalating to me.

This is how the Decision Box works - by considering boundaries like Finance, Go To Market, Product/Technology, and Operations for each decision space, we can set any team up for success.

 
 

Outline/Structure of the Talk

  1. Introduce The Decision Box concept through an example
    1. I use a real-world example from an Executive Team I coached that shaped decisions around their annual strategies.
    2. This example helps us understand how some of the box boundaries are less solid than others, depending on how much we currently know about the space we are exploring and how long of a time horizon we are considering. There is "gray area" and we have to know what to do with that.
  2. Explore a team level decision box for a Scrum team as a secondary example
    1. Again, using a real-world example from a Product Team I coached that was developed to support Scrum Teams in product decisions in Sprints.
  3. Using a template, teach attendees how to determine what the boundary categories of their box might be by considering several different decision spaces.
    1. I would like to elicit decision spaces from the room and then work through a couple.
  4. Explore what the possible values of the categories might be
    1. Again, using examples from the room will help move this from theoretical to real
  5. Intention setting
    1. Invite the room to pair up and describe a space where they could use the Decision Box when they return to work.

  • Demonstrate how to establish the boundary categories
  • Experiment with boundary values to learn how The Decision Box can be used to support decision making
