Hands On Workshop To Understand Why Scrum Works - Go Beyond Events and Artefacts

"Easy to understand but difficult to master " is an apt description for this brilliantly minimal framework that is called scrum. A common mistake made by the newbies is to focus on what I call scrum boundaries - The events and artefacts. This is not difficult to understand, events and artefacts form the tangible outer boundaries that are easy to grasp. They tell us how scrum is orgnized. But heart of this framework is driven by Empirism. For any person trying to implement scrum, it is important to understand not only how scrum works but more importantly why scrum works. This work shop that I take, focuses on "Why" scrum works. I find that the best lessons are learnt by experiencing and not while listening to a lecture. That is why I take this session as a workshop

The key messages I derive during the workshop are

1- Scrum is Incremental and Iterative

2- How Empirisim works , why It works - How each of the 3 pillars (Transperancy , Inspection and Adaptation) contribute to success of scrum?

3- Cross Functionality and Self Organization - How it works?

4- Why Scrum is a Value framework?

Outline/Structure of the Talk

Since this is a learning workshop, I do not use a PPT. The lessons and messages are derived by the attendees, I just create situations where the messages become clear and simple to understand

1- Context Setting - 10 minutes

2- Team formation -The attendees are divided in groups of 4-6 5 minutes

3- Explaining The Rules -5 minutes

4- The game it self has 4 rounds and each round highlights a specific aspect as to why scrum works. Each round takes about 10 minutes including a 5 minutes debrief to ensure that each participant has understood the message

5- Wrap up - 10 minutes

6- QnA -20 minutes

The game is played with poker chips and involves a lot of fun elements and encourages friendly competetion with prizes at end !

Learning Outcome

1- Scrum is Incremental and Iterative

2- How Empirisim works , why It works - How each of the 3 pillars (Transperancy , Inspection and Adaptation) contribute to success of scrum?

3- Cross Functionality and Self Organization - How it works?

4- Why Scrum is a Value framework?
