Building Powerful Roadmaps

Any organization’s ability to focus on what matters most to their customers is directly related to their ability to get valuable feedback from them. While more and more organizations embrace agile practices during the development of their services, they often lack in how they collect feedback and therefor don’t get the benefits they are after. After all, what is the upside to investing in being able to pivot, if there is no information available to guide the direction of that pivot?

The fact that many roadmaps leave little room for flexibility significantly contributes to this and building powerful roadmaps is a really hard task. How does one get feedback about a house without building it completely? How does one give feedback about a car without being able to drive it around the city for a couple of hours?

This session will provide you with practical techniques on how to build a powerful roadmap for your product or service, one that allows any organization to get valuable feedback from their customers. This workshop is based on ideas from the draft book Powerful Roadmaps.

Outline/structure of the Session

While this proposal describes the session as a workshop, I have given it as a talk (60 min) as well.

The workshop provides the participants with practice and guidance in using the referenced techniques using a fictitious enterprise project. After having introduced the challenges with building a roadmap for this project, the participants will be guided through a series of steps to finally reach a powerful roadmap, delivering on business value every step of the way:

  • Introduce to challenges with product/service development
  • Understand the difference between technical risks versus business risks
  • Prioritizes areas of concern according to the ultimate impact on the business
  • Brainstorm actions or functionality that can help reduce the risk
  • Prioritize identified functionality

A closing section will clearly summarize the learnings and provide the audience with the ability to ask any remaining questions.

The theoretical parts will introduce Agile Thinking as a framework, reference Cynefin and tie everything back to product and service development in today’s industry.

    The number of agile teams that I support went from 20 (too many) to more than 70 (absurd) in a few months. What could I do? How could I help them?

    From this need came the Agile Coach Program that Paul created and facilitated at ADP with a small group of individuals - one was Iaroslav Torbin. These participants already support (or wanted to support) teams (be they using Scrum or Kanban) and the individuals around them. This is the story of that journey and the results.

    Many people are taking on the mantle of Scrum Masters across agile teams around the world. Unfortunately, many of them have come from more traditional work structures that don't develop effective Scrum Masters. There is a misconception about the purpose of a Scrum Master. Often the Scrum Master becomes the facilitator or the project manager. This has to stop. Effective leaders, agile coaches, and Scrum Masters take advantage of vital behaviours in supporting scrum masters or by building mastery within these behaviours.

    Influencer - the model

    During this workshop, participants will go through a series of exercises to identify the purpose of a Scrum Master, how we can measure success, identify potential vital behaviours, learn from others to determine the vital behaviours, and then create a sound influence strategy to enable effective Scrum Masters and the work that they do. This workshop will use concepts and the model from the book "Influencer" (by Joseph Grenny et all) which details the three (3) keys to a successful change initiative and uses the six (6) sources of influence.

    Dale Simpson - Why do I need a Scrum Master anyway?

    Even as Scrum is increasingly adopted in a widening range of contexts, many business and technical leaders question the value of a Scrum Master. We believe that part of the reason for this is because this role has been often misunderstood by those who function in it. Sometime in the recent years, the focus of the Scrum Master role has changed from that of a leader (albeit a "servant leader") to a detached focus on story points and team dynamics, with little attention to the business outcomes that the team's work is meant to bring about.

    As the role has been relegated to that of a “ship’s counselor” for the team, many business leaders are questioning the budget allocation toward the role as it has become less obvious how Scrum Masters contribute to achieving business objectives. Many organizations, therefore, attempt to do Scrum with either just a pro forma Scrum Master (e.g., the former team lead) or skip on this role altogether. Needless to say, both of the approaches prove problematic.

    The goal of this session is to explore the current state of the Scrum Master in the enterprise and propose a refined definition of the role, detailing the competence areas key to the effectiveness of the role and describe precisely how Scrum Masters directly impact achieving business outcomes as an expert role that no team, and no business, can do without.

    Gino Marckx - Don't hire more coaches, increase your coaching capacity!

    Many organizations have difficulty hiring coaches to support their teams in applying agile principles and practices. As a result, many teams are left to their own devices and often face challenges that can lead to mediocre results and even demotivated teams, quite the opposite what the introduction of agile principles intended to achieve.

    I believe that many organizations are trying to solve the wrong problem. It is not the lack of coaches on the market that is causing the lack of support for the teams, but the lack of coaching capacity. What if there are alternative ways to address this redefined problem besides only hiring more coaches?
