Project delivery is complex and subject to numerous sources of delay and risks. In this talk we explore why software delivery struggles due to technical constraints between a web of teams. Most importantly, what techniques can be applied to simplify delivery and improve time to market. This includes a real world case study where System Thinking techniques are utilized to achieve amazing customer outcomes.

  1. Discuss typical pain points of delivering large projects
  2. Discuss specific pain points within Agile Teams with respect to delivery
  3. Explain the basics of System Thinking, including the Theory of Constraints
  4. Explain how these theoretical concepts can apply in the day to day of Agile teams
  5. Highlight the importance of identifying and addressing technical dependencies between teams. Including how dependencies become the constraint in delivery.
  6. Explain simple strategies to address those dependencies using System Thinking
  7. Review a short Case Study (real world example) where these strategies were used to help 7 teams work together to deliver a Financial Savings Product. Including a focus on how teams coordinate together to address their dependencies.
  8. Conclude on how the bottleneck strategies were applied to improve coordination between teams, and drive home the need to focus on technical dependencies

Going from churn , anxiety, and a feeling of helplessness to meeting critical timelines that drive fantastic customer outcomes. In the case study, the new savings product was so successful, that in the first week alone $250MM entered into this new account type, 44% of which was new capital!

    I like these aspects of the submission, and they should be retained:

    • Explaining a Systems Thinking approach to improvement - there needs to be more of these talks at agile conferences. 
    • Backed up by a real world example? Excellent work, Mr. Zahreddine!

    I think the submission could be improved by:

    • Some way to engage the audience with the topic directly, like a demo or exercise, but that might require more time. I think the session is worthy as-is, hope I can attend!

    Agile is about keeping pace with change. Inclusion ensures we bring everyone along with us.

    Agile initially brought a bunch of individuals cross-functional specialists together to work as a team. This cross-functional team was able to deliver complex products more quickly. The concept of diverse teammates looking at a problem and sharing their perspective from their skill background proved to be the ideal way in creating solutions that meet the needs of domestic customers.

    As companies execute on their digital strategy, products are now global. Having cross-functional teams are no longer sufficient. Agile teams need to be cross-functional AND diverse to meet the needs of global customers.
