Naomi Azar, Ph.D. is a postdoctoral fellow in clinical psychology at the Trauma Center at Justice Resource Institute, one of the nation’s leading agencies in the study and treatment of the psychological impact of exposure to trauma. She is a clinician with Project REACH, a program that serves victims of human trafficking throughout the United States. In her work with Project REACH, she offers short-term assessment and mental health services to survivors of sex and labor trafficking, including foreign-born and domestic survivors of all ages. She also offers training and consultation to anti-trafficking professionals throughout the U.S. Dr. Azar completed a pre-doctoral internship at Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx, NY, where she focused on the intergenerational transmission of trauma. She has worked with children, adolescents and families who present with extensive histories of trauma, both singular and complex in nature. She worked with a trauma evaluation team at the Butler Child Advocacy Center in the Bronx, NY, and provided treatment to minors who were victims of sexual and/or physical abuse. She also facilitated a group intervention for mother-infant dyads referred by the Administration for Children’s Services and treated adults suffering from Posttraumatic Stress Disorder. Internationally, Dr. Azar has worked with CARE International and Save the Children, evaluating the impact of an intervention designed to address the needs of vulnerable children living in poverty.

Trauma in one generation has been found to impact the next. In ways both subtle and overt, the traumatized individual often brings the past into the present. For parents with a history of trauma, this can have a profound effect on their parenting.
In the case of human trafficking, trauma is often at the center. Trafficking typically involves fear, intimidation, and a sense of helplessness. The current workshop will focus on the intersection of trafficking, trauma and parenting. We will consider ways in which a parent’s trafficking experience might impact the parent-child relationship. Case examples will be presented in order to illustrate specific areas of vulnerability and to identify intervention options for caseworkers involved in a family system. Additionally, a trafficking survivor will be invited to join this workshop in order to share struggles and successes related to managing the effects of trauma in the context of motherhood.
