Ulf Wiger has been using Erlang since 1992, bought the first-ever commercial license in 1993 and has been a full-time Erlang dev since 1996. While at Ericsson, he became something of an Erlang ambassadeur, speaking about the AXD 301 ATM Switch/Media Gateway and about how Erlang works in large industrial projects. After leaving Ericsson, Ulf joined Erlang Solutions as CTO. He then entered the Connected Device market first via the startup Feuerlabs, then as a freelance contractor to Jaguar Land Rover, and Lead Developer of GENIVI’s Remote Vehicle Interaction component. Ulf joined the Aeternity Core Team in 2017 and is now busy exploring and developing blockchain technology. In the Open Source arena, Ulf is perhaps best known for components like Gproc, Jobs, and Exometer. In his spare time, Ulf doubles as an opera singer and dabbles in politics.

Mnesia_rocksdb 2 - Mnesia backend plugin on steroids

The Aeternity Core blockchain system has been using mnesia with the mnesia_rocksdb backend plugin since it went live in 2017, and now handles a 100 GB database. In this talk, we talk about our experiences and present an evolution of the mnesia_rocksdb plugin. In the new version, we introduce a new API, allowing applications to use the fast RocksDb low-level API and its advanced features, while respecting Mnesia metadata and even indexing support. Mnesia-level and rocksdb-level access can coexist in the same system, with a bit of care.

As one who joined the Erlang community before it really even was one, I've had reason to consider and debate what makes Erlang special. Because it _is_ special. In this talk, I will summarize some of my own thoughts on the matter, exemplified by some war stories. My thesis is that while the impetus for creating the language is important, the evolution of the community and the niches where Erlang got some traction also play a vital role. Learning what has been successful in Erlang, what hasn't, and why, could give important clues not just to future adopters, but perhaps also to other communities (Elixir?) still developing a personality.
