Vehicle to Everything (V2X) & Intelligent Transportation Systems

Cooperative Intelligent Transportation Systems (C-ITS) allows vehicles to communicate with other vehicles and infrastructure. V2X is the complementary technology that enables this. The fusion of in-car sensors, intelligent infrastructure (e.g., traffic lights) and IoT based solutions is targeted at:
- reducing road accident fatalities
- improving traffic flow
- allowing for better urban planning
This presentation will demonstrate these key features explaining how/where and potentially when this will become a reality. The session will also show a working example of how this infrastructure is integrated into vehicles and current road infrastructure (e.g. traffic lights). We will be building cars using Raspberry Pi, traffic lights built upon the international standards currently being adopted.
Recent media announcements made by automotive manufacturers, along with increasing government involvement, is set to make this a reality in the not-too-distant future. Development of autonomous cars is happening concurrently and the convergence of these two areas will be required to achieve full vehicle automation.

Outline/Structure of the Talk

  1. Talk - Introduction to V2X including standards(J2735, 1609.3, 5.9Ghz spectrum) being proposed.
  2. Talk - Explain the proposed use cases (Forward collision alert, Do not pass warning, traffic phase and signaling).
  3. Demo - Building the Raspberry Pi Car which will demonstrate traffic phase and signaling and basic safety messages(we need 2 but will bring one pre-build)

Learning Outcome

The future of automated travel and better urban capacity planning for intelligent transportation networks, a basic understanding of how to program micro controllers ultimately enabling participants to build similar system.

Target Audience

Individuals interested in general technology including areas such as IoT, Smart Cities, and Insurance/emergency vehicle infrastructure. This demonstration/talk will utilize multiple programming languages (Python, C++, .Net).

Prerequisites for Attendees

Just be enthusiastic about IoT and technology in general
